Box Score Another week and another exciting finish for The College at Brockport Football team as the Golden Eagles scored a 17-12 victory over Hartwick College Saturday afternoon in an Empire 8 game at Wright Stadium in Oneonta.
The Hawks (2-5 overall, 1-4 Empire 8) had a chance to take the lead in the closing seconds but a fourth down play with less than a minute to play ended with a pass that was caught near the back of the end zone but the Hartwick receiver landed out of bounds for the incomplete pass giving the ball back to Brockport (5-2, 3-2) to run out the clock.
It is the second week in a row the game has come down to the final play with the Brockport defense on the field and able to hang on for the victory. Last week in Alfred, the Golden Eagles intercepted a Hali Mary pass into the end zone on the final play of the game.
Sophomore Dan Andrews (Rochester, NY/Franklin) ran for 185 yards and senior wide receiver Andrew Mrozek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) hauled down six passes for 132 yards to lead the Brockport offense. Sophomore Jake Brickler (Hilton, NY/Hilton) led the Golden Eagles with 12 tackles, four for lost yardage and three sacks as Brockport recorded nine sacks and intercepted two passes in the win. Senior Anthony Bianchi (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) had eight tackles and an interception with a 25-yard return for Brockport.
After a scoreless first quarter, Brockport opened the scoring with just 6:50 left to play in the first half as Mrozek caught a 48-yard scoring pass from junior quarterback Chase Venuto (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) to give Brockport the 7-0 lead.
Hartwick answered with 1:24 left in the opening half scoring on a two-yard run after a 49-yard pass play put the ball inside the Brockport five-yard line. The extra point attempt failed leaving Brockport ahead 7-6.
Before the end of the half, Andrews broke a 65-yard run on the second play of the ensuing drive and Brockport took a 14-6 lead into the halftime intermission.
The only scoring of the third quarter was a critical field goal by sophomore Tyler Perna (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) after the Brockport drive stalled at the Hartwick 18-yard line. The 35-yard field goal was a career best for Perna and gave Brockport a 17-6 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Hartwick pushed all the way to the Brockport 24 yard line but an incomplete pass on fourth down gave the ball back to the Golden Eagles.
After a short Brockport drive, an Ian Gilhousen (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) punt and a personal foul against the Hawks pushed the ball inside the Hartwick 15-yard line.
The Hawks completed six consecutive passes to move all the way to the Brockport five-yard line before a short three-yard pass into the end zone trimmed the Brockport lead to 17-12. The Hawks went for two on the extra point but the pass was intercepted in the end zone by Colby Morabito (Rochester, NY/Hilton) for his 14th career interception.
After a three-and-out drive for the Golden Eagles, Gilhousen booted a 54-yard punt into the end zone giving the Hawks the ball on their own 20-yard line with 4:31 left to play.
Midway through the drive and facing a fourth-and-10 from the 42 yard line, Hartwick completed a pass to the Brockport 16. A two-yard rush, an incomplete pass and a seven-yard completion left the Hawks in another fourth-down situation with time running out. Hartwick quarterback John Garcia found an open receiver in the back of the end zone but the throw was high forcing the receiver to jump for the catch and landed out of bounds out the back of the end zone.
Brockport lined up in the victory formation to down the ball and end the game.
The Golden Eagles return home November 1 to face Ithaca College at 1 pm.
