Game Recap: Baseball |

2016 season comes to a close in dramatic fashion

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The College at Brockport Baseball team dropped in heartbreaking fashion two one run games to be eliminated from contention for the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship on Saturday to nationally ranked Cortland and Oswego.

In its first game Brockport (23-19 Overall) took the Red Dragons to extra innings but fell 4-3 in 11 innings before needing a victory against Oswego to stay alive in the SUNYAC Tournament. The Golden Eagles held a late lead against the Lakers but a five run eighth proved the difference as Brockport fell 9-8.

Cortland 4 – Brockport 3 (11 innings)

Cortland took the early lead in the second inning on three consecutive singles against McCumiskey. The junior right handed pitcher however held the scoring to just a single run as he induced a fly out to Dane Cala before a groundout to Greg Ruddy.

Brockport waited until the fourth inning before getting its first runners to cross the plate on the SUNYAC ERA leader Seth Lamando. Wesley Burghardt and Chris Davis hit back-to-back singles through the infield. Following a strikeout, Paul Ludden chopped a ball sharply towards the third baseman that was knocked down. As Cortland's Steven Figueroa attempted to recover on the play, his flip towards second was off the mark allowing Burghardt to score. Justin Valentino followed the error with a liner to the gap scoring Davis in the process and giving Brockport the 2-1 lead.

Cortland rallied for two in the bottom half of the inning on two hits and two walks. Cala made a tremendous catch ranging far to his left into foul territory dodging the bullpen mounds to make a sliding catch for the second out of the inning. McCumiskey struck out the final batter of the frame to end the dangerous bases loaded situation.

The Golden Eagles evened the score during the sixth inning when they loaded the bases on a hit by pitch and two singles. With Burghardt, Davis and Martin on base Ludden hit the ball up the middle towards the second baseman. The Red Dragons turned a double play but Brockport's Burghardt scored his second run of the game to tie the score at 3-all.

Brockport traded blanks for four consecutive innings as both Lamando and McCumiskey pitched through the regularly scheduled nine innings. Lamando worked into the 10th inning as McCumiskey was relieved by Nick Jerolimov in extra innings.

The Red Dragons attempted to end the game in the first extra inning. Jerolimov intentionally walked a batter to load the bases following an error with just one out. He reached back and got the Cortland catcher Justin Teague to swing and miss for the second out. The Cortland leadoff man Nick Hart grounded out to Davis at first base for the final out to extend the game one more inning.

Lamando finally exited the game in the 11th inning when Turner Parry entered the game. He quickly worked his way to two outs with four pitches before Ludden singled to extend the inning.

The Golden Eagles tried to duplicate its previous inning with bases loaded on a single, walk and intentional walk but a deep fly to center field was far enough to score Fabio Ricci and give the Red Dragons the 4-3 win.

Oswego 9 – Brockport 8

Both the Golden Eagles and the Lakers combined for 34 hits as the offenses desperately sought to score more than the opposition in the elimination game. Brockport rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning.

Burghardt and Davis led the inning off with back-to-back hits before Josh Martin's sacrifice bunt pushed the runners into scoring position. Eli Carrera stayed patient at the plate to earn a walk to load the bases. Cala sent a 2-1 pitch up the middle and into the outfield for a run scoring single as the throw from Oswego's Wes Randall careened off of the mound and by the catcher to allow another run in. Luke Gilbert followed the hit with one of his own, sending a blooper over the drawn in infield to plate Carrera and put Brockport ahead 4-3.

The Golden Eagles added two more runs on a historic hit, a home run from Burghardt. Ruddy singled to lead the seventh inning off, one batter prior to Burghardt sending a 1-1 pitch off the scoreboard in left centerfield for his 60th hit of the season, which tied the previous single season record for Brockport. Burghardt is now tied with Nate Parrino who finished the 2010 season with 60 hits.

Oswego scored a single run in the seventh to close the gap between the Green and Gold squads. However Cala's leadoff eighth inning single and stolen base put himself into scoring position. Brett Sanders sent a liner into centerfield to score the speedy Cala, putting Brockport ahead 7-4.

Two hits led off the eighth inning for Oswego before Martin made a great attempt at a blooper in left field that appeared initially to be an out. However the call was reversed and a sacrifice bunt put the tying runs into scoring position. Oswego added four more singles during the eighth inning to go ahead 9-7.

In the ninth inning, Brockport refused to give up without a fight. Davis worked a four pitch walk. One batter later with two outs, Carrera hit a ball towards the shortstop but his hustle forced an errant throw to keep the game going.

Cala hit the ball down the left field line to score Davis for the final Golden Eagle run of the 2016 season. Cala finished the game with four hits while Ruddy and Burghardt each finished the game with three hits apiece.
