OSWEGO, N.Y. – The No. 13/19 Brockport wrestling team claimed second place as a team at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC) Championships on Saturday. The squad saw wrestlers place in the top three at seven of ten possible weight classes, including one champion and three runner up performances.
No. 10 ranked
Jonathan Haas was the sole champion on the day for the Green and Gold, taking the 125-lb. weight class. His performance earned him the honor of Most Outstanding Wrestler at the ECWC Championships. After earning the second seed and a first round bye, Haas defeated his first opponent handily with a 23-8 technical fall. His next two bouts would prove a bit more difficult, but Haas was up for the challenge, beating both opponents by decision including the top seeded Jimmy Kaishian from Ithaca College.
Dillon Stowell used an improbable run to take home third at the 133-lb weight class. After losing his first bout, the senior went on to win his next four, including a rematch of the match he originally lost against Ithaca's Bryan Israel.
Nate Walker had a chance to win the 141-lb bracket after an opening round bye and two wins, but fell just short against top seeded Nick Wahba of Ithaca College, settling for second.
No. 6 ranked
Sean Peacock had a similar outcome at 149, cruising to three easy wins before falling in a tight 3-1 decision in the championship dual. His opening round matchup with Cortland's Jarrod Mauge was as dominant a win as they come, as Peacock needed only 0:47 seconds to pin his opponent.
At 165,
Michael Falcon made it to the quarterfinal round before falling to eventual champion Nick Velez of Ithaca College. The senior showed resiliency though, coming back to win his next two bouts which earned him third place in the weight class.
No. 2 ranked
Triston Engle won his first three duals by fall, all coming in less than 1:30. In his championship matchup against Ithaca's Carlos Toribio, Engle fell just short, dropping a 6-5 decision and settling for second place.
Jacob Morris rounded out the day for the Golden Eagles with a third place performance that saw his only loss come to the eventual champion of the weight class. In his third place bout, Morris took down Cortland's Nick Lupi, securing the team second place at the championships.
Wrestling will be back in action on Wednesday when they make the short drive to RIT for a dual meet beginning at 7 p.m.
