LACROSSE, WISC. –
Jonathan Haas and
Triston Engle, the two Brockport wrestling qualifiers for the NCAA DIII Championships, each put together impressive performances this weekend in their respective weight classes. Both wrestlers earned All-America status by making it through to the second day of competition, with Haas finishing in third and Engle in fourth. The two also helped secure a top-ten finish for the Brockport team. Engle was also award the National Wrestling Coaches Association Most Falls.
Haas' tournament began early on Friday, when he beat his opponent from Milliken handily with a 14-2 major decision. From there, he was victorious once again against Anthony Munoz of Elmhurst, propelling into the quarterfinal round with his 3-1 sudden victory.
Zachary Beckner proved too much for Haas in his next bout, as he was unable to score and fell by a 3-0 decision, moving him over to the consolation bracket. The junior rebounded from there however, taking down Wisconsin Eau-Claire's Zackary Sirny to move to the second day of competition.
Haas came up big on Saturday, starting out 2-0 with tight decision victories over opponents from Johnson and Wales and Wartburg to earn a chance at third place. In a hard fought third place bout, he was eventually able to come out victorious, beating second seeded CJ Pestrano of Central College 3-2.
Engle needed one less win to reach the quarterfinals than his teammate, but was able to secure it Friday morning with a 3-1 decision over Wheaton College's Michael Swider. He then fell in the second round against second seeded Kyle Frank of Wartburg to move over to the consolation bracket.
The sophomore dominated his first opponent in the consolation bracket, winning by a 15-0 technical fall, and securing All-America status.
Similar to Haas, Engle started his Saturday 2-0, winning both bouts by fall in the opening period. Unfortunately, he was not able to take home third, falling to Loras' Guy Patron Jr. to slide into fourth position.
The tournament marks the end to this year's wrestling season, which was the 47th straight winning season under coach
Don Murray. Both Haas and Engle will return next year, hoping to continue to improve on their impressive performances this season.
