Undefeated Effort
Head Coach Jason Mangone has set a new standard for the SUNY Brockport football program since taking over in 2013. He has guided the Golden Eagles to postseason play in eight of his ten seasons, including three consecutive NCAA Division III Football Championship appearances (2017, 2018, 2019). He has 63 wins in the last seven seasons, and this dominant streak of success included a 21-game Empire 8 winning streak. After the program missed a season in 2020, the Golden Eagles returned to action in 2021 and went on to win the ECAC Clayton Chapman Bowl Game under Mangone. In 2022, the program saw yet another winning season at 7-3 and earned hosting rights for the ECAC Clayton Chapman Bowl Game, but the game was not played due to the weather. The 2023 season saw another winning season under Mangone in his 10th season at the helm. Brockport went 8-3 overall, 5-1 in the Empire 8, and made another trip to the postseason with an appearance in the ECAC Asa S. Bushnell Bowl Game. In 2024, Mangone led the Golden Eagles to their fourth straight ECAC Bowl Game, defeating Rochester, 42-23, in the Clayton Chapman Bowl and finishing the season 8-3 (5-2 E8).

Guiding Athletes to Success
Mangone’s head coaching experience includes guiding 133 All-Conference selections, 41 All-Region picks, 12 d3football.com All-Americans, five Empire 8 Rookies of the Year, three Offensive Players of the Year, three Defensive Players of the Year and one Special Teams Player of the Year. Guiding these successful athletes has led to three consecutive Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year honors for Mangone and his fellow coaches (2017, 2018, 2019).

The Three-Peat
In 2019, Mangone and his staff were named the Empire 8 Conference Coaching Staff of the Year for a record third straight season after winning the program’s third consecutive Empire 8 Conference title. No other coaching staff in the 18-year history of the Empire 8 has earned three straight staff of the year honors.

The 2019 edition of the Golden Eagles rattled off eight straight victories, including rallying from a 23-0 first-half deficit to earn a thrilling 32-26 overtime victory over then-ranked No. 18 Cortland, to help seal the program’s third straight E8 title.

The league title secured Brockport’s third straight NCAA Championship appearance, where the Golden Eagles went on the road to defeat Western New England in first-round action before falling in the Sweet 16 at eventual national semifinalist Muhlenberg.

The Golden Eagles finished the year with the top scoring defense and the top rushing offense in the Empire 8 Conference.  They also led all levels of NCAA Football in rushing defense for the second straight year.  Brockport landed 13 student-athletes on All-Conference teams, including five first team selections, and the Conference’s Rookie of the Year. This parlayed into three d3football.com all-region first team selections.

Second Straight Undefeated Regular Season
In 2018, he led the Golden Eagles back to the NCAA Tournament for a second straight season, after securing back-to-back Empire 8 titles with a 10-0 undefeated regular season record. Brockport was selected as the top ranked team in the NCAA Division III East Region and earned a national ranking as high as No. 3 (program-record).

The defense was stellar all year, leading all NCAA Divisions (FBS, FCS, DII and DIII) in rushing defense, red zone defense, and defensive third-down conversion percentage. Coach Mangone was awarded the title of AFCA Region I Coach of the Year for a second straight year.

Mangone led the way for three All-American selections, 19 all-conference picks, the league and the region’s offensive and defensive players of the year, as well as nine all-region selections.

The Final Four & National Coach of the Year
Mangone was named the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) National and Regional Coach of the Year in 2017 after leading the Golden Eagles to a 13-1 record and an appearance in the NCAA Final Four. The incredible run into the national spotlight was highlighted by 13 straight victories, two home playoff victories and a thrilling 31-28 win on the road in the national quarterfinals.

The season was the best in Brockport football history and marked the first time in over 10 years that an East Region team advanced to the NCAA Semifinals. 20 different Brockport players earned All-Conference accolades, including an Offensive Player of the Year, Special Teams Player of the Year, and Rookie of the Year. 10 more earned D3Football.com All-East Region status, with four being named All-Americans.

Mangone was also named the D3football.com Regional Coach of the Year and the Rochester Press Radio Club Coach of the Year following the 2017 season. The team was also awarded the Lambert Cup for best team in the East Region for the first time since 2002.

Building the Foundation
In 2016, the football program posted a 7-4 record, earning a bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) President’s Bowl at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa. They averaged over 37 points per game, outscoring their opponents by nearly 10 points per game. 11 different players earned All-Conference selections, while the program’s all-time leading rusher Dan Andrews was named an All-American for the second straight season.

During the 2015 season, the Golden Eagles posted a 5-5 record under Mangone.  Throughout the season, 12 Golden Eagles brought home 29 awards, including d3football.com’s National Team of the Week, and the Empire 8’s Defensive and Offensive Player of the Year.  Brockport earned seven spots on the All-Empire 8 team, plus two on the D3football.com All-East Region Team. Andrews and Tarik Bennett were each named All-Americans by d3football.com.  Andrews broke several school records and was the national scoring leader with a 15.6 points per game average, earning him the award for Brockport’s Athlete of the Year.

In 2014, Mangone coached Brockport to a 5-5 record, including a three-game winning streak midway through the season. Under Mangone, 17 Golden Eagles tallied 22 awards, ranging from ECAC Rookie of the Week to the offensive line earning a spot on d3football.com’s National Team of the Week. Brockport also earned a handful of postseason awards as six Golden Eagles were named to the Empire 8 All-Conference team and one player was named to the d3football.com All-East Region Second-Team. Mangone also led the football team to earning one of Brockport’s highest awards as Richie Welch was named Brockport’s Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.

A Memorable First Year as Head Coach
In 2013, he led the Golden Eagles to an 8-3 overall record, as well as the first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Conference Champion Title in school history and an East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northwest Bowl victory. The eight wins were the highest by a head coach in his first season. Mangone’s team broke the total yards in a season record with 4,793, as well as rushing yards in a season with 2,354. The Golden Eagles also captured the first shutout since 2005 and the first NJAC shutout in program history with a 24-0 win over Montclair St. on Nov. 9. Nationally, out of 242 teams, the Golden Eagles finished ninth in sacks against, 20th in team pass efficiency defense, and 29th in total offense.
