The 1982 Brockport wrestling team finished their regular season with a 9-1 record. The team finished in 2nd place at the New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championship with a team score of 94.5 points which was only topped by Army, who generated 104.5 points. The team was led by the All-American Frank Famiano, who was also named MVP of the Tournament. Both Famiano and Anthony Conetta won the final of their respective weight classes.
They continued their great season by winning the SUNYAC conference team championship which was their 9th SUNYAC title in the past 11 years. Brockport totaled 149 points to beat out the 2nd place finisher, Oswego, who finished with 113.25 points. The team walked away with five individual championships: Frank Famiano (126lbs) who was also named the meet’s outstanding wrestler, Ron Winnie (150lbs), Dereck Bigford (158lbs), Anthony Conetta (177lbs), and Chris Haley (Heavyweight).
After the SUNYAC championships, Brockport’s 1982 team set their sights on the NCAA Division III National Championship which eluded them the previous year where they lost to Trenton State. Going into the finals of the tournament, Brockport was well represented having five wrestlers make it to the finals against the defending champions, Trenton State, who advanced three wrestlers into the finals. Brockport came out on top producing three individual National Champions, a team national Championship, and the NCAA’s most outstanding wrestler (Frank Famiano). That was the first time Brockport claimed three individual National Champions and that was the team’s 3rd National Championship in a six year span. The three individual champions were: Frank Famiano, Ron Winnie and the unseeded freshman Jeff Cox. All three individual champions automatically qualified to wrestle in the NCAA Division I National Tournament while Anthony Conetta was chosen as wild card to compete in the tournament.
In 1982, six of the nine competing Golden Eagles took home All-American status.
Also in 1982, Brockport State became the first school since the NCAA Division III Championship began in 1974, to win three (3) team titles.
