The College at Brockport Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams will head to Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center for the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships. The championships will consist of the nine conference schools and will kick off Wednesday, Feb. 8 and run through Saturday, Feb. 11. Wednesday will consist of preliminary diving only, beginning at 12:00 pm. The following three-days will feature preliminary races and diving during the morning sessions, starting at 9:00 a.m. each day, followed by event finals in the evening sessions, which start at 6:00 p.m. daily.
The men's team completed the regular season with a 6-2 overall season, including a 2-1 record against SUNYAC opponents.
Nathan Dubois ((Mendon, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) is seeded in the top six in the 100 and 200-meter freestyle and is 10th in the 50-meter freestyle. Head coach Jack Stover III sees DuBois improving on his performance at SUNYAC's from last year. “Nate is in an excellent position” Stover said, “to significantly improve on his placing from last year.”
Kyle Bree (Newark, NY/Newark) is seeded 14th in the 500-meter freestyle and 9th in the 1650-meter freestyle. Stover also believes the sprinters are in a good position entering the meet. “The Brockport sprinters have placed themselves to score quite well at this meet.”
Chris O'Connell (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) has placed personal-best times in both the breaststroke events this year and is seeded 12th in the 100-meter and 9th in the 200-meter.
Marc Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint),
Chris Heckman (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa), and
Stephen Owen (North Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker), are also in a position to contribute to the point total of the team.
Chris Austin (Middlesex, NY/Austin), reigning SUNYAC Male Diver of the Week, enters the championships as one of the top divers in the conference. Austin finished 3rd on the 1-meter dives last year, but the two divers who scored above Austin have since graduated. Austin also placed on the 3-meter board last year, finishing seventh.
For the women,
Erin Luke (Latham, NY/Shaker) is seeded in the top eight in the 100-meter backstroke and the 50-meter freestyle. Luke set the school record in the 50-meter freestyle earlier this year. Luke is also seeded in the top 16 in the 100-freestyle.
Alanna Blasting (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) is seeded in the top 16 in the 400-meter individual medley, 200-meter individual medley, and the 200-meter breaststroke. Blasting broke the school record in the 400-meter IM and missed out on the 200-meter IM by .27 seconds.
Chloe Macdonald (Williamsville, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy) is seeded in the top 16 in three different events.
Melanie Melewski (New Baltimore, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) is seeded in the top 6 in the 100-meter breaststroke and 9th in the 100-meter breaststroke. Melewski broke the school record in the 200-meter breaststroke this season.
Paige Whitney (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) is also seeded in the top 16 in a pair of events, improving from her championship times from last season.
Rachel Coia (Rochester, NY/Spencerport),
Mackenzie Wilcox (Ballston Spa, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), and
Hannah Sonner (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post West) are three freshman who look to compete well at the meet. “All three freshman” said Stover “are seeded quite well in their races, all with the potential to contribute significant points to the team.”
Five divers,
Marcy Merritt (Sherwood, WI/Kaukauna),
Audrey Jackson (Oswego, NY/Oswego),
Lydia Allen (Cortland, NY/Cortland),
Stasi Ozminkowski (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena), and
Megan Vandewinckel (Ontario, NY/Wayne), are also in position to place well at the meet. All five divers have done their personal-best scores in one of the last two meets, including Merritt who was named SUNYAC Female Diver of the Week for her performance at the Oswego Diving Invitational.
