Three student-athletes from The College at Brockport Wrestling team will compete at the upcoming NCAA Championships on Friday and Saturday in Cedar Rapids, IA. Junior
John Wilkinson (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) will compete at the heavyweight division while sophomore
Matt Ellis (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) will wrestle at the 125-pound class. Freshman
Jordan Dyer (Chenango Forks, NY/Chenango Forks) earned a bid at the 141-pound weight class.
Competing at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship last week at Ohio Northern University, Ellis claimed the 125-pound title with a major decision and three decisions to earn the automatic berth into the NCAA Championship. Ellis entered the NCAA regional as the top overall seed in the weight class and will enter the championships with a 20-2 overall record and has won 12 matches in a row for the Golden Eagles.
Wilkinson also earned an automatic berth to the NCAA championships with an individual title at the regional qualifier. The junior continued his impressive winning streak with three decisions and a 4-2 sudden victory against Jeremy Rieth from Elizabethtown to claim the heavyweight title. Wilkinson has now won 24 matches in a row and posted a regular season record of 26-2, including a 23-1 mark against Division III opponents. In the latest Division III national rankings, Wilkinson came in eighth.
Dyer, the four-time Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC) Rookie of the Week earns his first trip to the NCAA Championships after finishing as the runner-up at the Ohio regional. Dyer scored one of the biggest upsets of the meet as the No. 7 seed scored a major decision and two decisions to advance to the championship bout. The freshman was pinned in the title match but still earned an automatic berth to the championships.
Ellis enters the tournament as the No. 8 seed and will square off against Tom Casper from Springfield. Wilkinson also enters as the No. 8 seed and will take on Tom Foote from Williams College. Dyer's first round opponent will be Nathaniel Behnke from UW-Eau Claire.
