Behind Mike Breman’s (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-JFK) eighth-minute goal, The College at Brockport’s men’s soccer team got off to a positive start in its quest to repeat as champions of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC). Breman scored the game’s only goal as Brockport defeated Cortland 1-0 in the SUNYAC quarterfinals Saturday, and Breman, a senior defender, earned The College at Brockport’s Male Athlete of the Week honors.
Following a Cortland foul on senior defender Jeff Palumbo (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia), Breman stepped up and drilled his 35-yard direct kick into the far corner for his sixth goal of the season. Breman’s six scores are tied for second-most on the team, and he trails only senior forward Jamey Crumb (McGraw, NY/McGraw) in scoring for Brockport. It is Breman’s second time winning the award this year; he also won the Week 1 Male Athlete of the Week award.
Behind Breman, the stout Brockport defense has surrendered only six goals, tops in the SUNYAC, and has pitched 11 shutouts.
Third-seeded Brockport (12-2-2) advances into the SUNYAC semifinals and will face second-seeded Fredonia (10-8) at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Oneonta.
