After a record-setting performance at the Paul Short Run, Rachel Malone (Fairport, NY/Fairport) of the women’s cross country team has been named this week’s Brockport Female Athlete of the Week. Malone broke the school record for the third time this year.
The Paul Short Run, hosted by Lehigh University, is one of the top cross country meets in the country. Malone finished second overall out of 342 runners with a new school record time of 22:01. The Golden Eagles competed in the Brown Division, a group of 39 teams consisting of NCAA Division I teams such as Pittsburgh, Rhode Island, and Princeton.
Competing on a muddy and imperfect course, the sophomore finished 11 seconds off of the top overall finisher. Malone bested the previous school record at the Fredonia Invitational of Sept. 8 and then again at the YellowJacket Invitational on Sept. 15 with a time of 22:04.8. Malone has twice been named the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Female Runner of the Week this year.
Malone and the Golden Eagles will compete at the Oberlin Invitational on Oct. 13 before competing at the SUNYAC Championships on Oct. 27 and the NCAA Atlantic Regional on Nov. 10.
