Sophomore Matt Ellis (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) of the wrestling team earned a spot in the NCAA Division III Championships and has been named The College at Brockport Male Athlete of the Week.
Competing at the Mideast Regional Championship at Ohio Northern University, Ellis claimed the individual championship in the 125 pound weight class.
Ellis entered the meet as the top seed in the weight class and opened up with an 18-5 major decision over Michael Buckiso of John Carroll University. Ellis then scored an 8-2 decision over Kyle McNulty from Elizabethtown. The sophomore advanced to the championship round with an 8-4 decision over the No. 4 seed Jerry Pasquale from Ohio Northern.
Ellis earned the NCAA berth with a hard-fought 4-3 decision over Jacob Spearman of Washington and Jefferson for the championship.
Ellis, along with teammates John Wilkinson (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) and Jordan Dyer (Chenango Forks, NY/Chenango Forks) will participate at the NCAA Championships on March 15-16 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
