Sophomore Matt Ellis (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) became the 133rd All-American for head coach Don Murray’s wrestling team and has been named The College at Brockport Male Athlete of the Week.
Competing at the NCAA Division III National Championship in Cedar Rapids, Iowa over the weekend, Ellis picked up a pair of wins on Friday afternoon to guarantee an All-American finish for the sophomore.
Ellis entered the tournament as the No. 8 seed and won his first match of the tournament on Friday with a 5-4 decision over Springfield’s Tom Casper. Ellis squared off against the top seed of the tournament, Ricardo Gomez from Ithaca. Ellis was pinned in 2:18.
The sophomore responded with a 5-1 decision over Jacob Spearman from Washington and Jefferson. In the seventh place match, Ellis fell by a technical fall, but assured himself of an eighth-place finish to earn All-American status.
Ellis, who entered the NCAA Tournament on a 12-match winning streak, finished the season with a 22-5 record.
