Junior Kayla Barber (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) has been named The College at Brockport Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 27. Barber played two exceptional matches when the Brockport volleyball team needed them most.
In Brockport’s last weekend of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Pool Play before the Tournament schedule was finalized, Barber led the team in kills and to two match wins to help the Golden Eagles clinch their first SUNYAC Tournament appearance since 2009.
After dropping the first match of the weekend to Cortland, Brockport was in desperate need of wins against Oneonta and Potsdam. Barber responded with a stellar performance of 12 kills compared to two errors for a 0.312 hitting percentage. She also added two blocked shots in the three set sweep of Oneonta.
Against Potsdam, Barber again dominated on the offensive end tallying 14 kills compared to three errors for a 0.333 hitting percentage. She also chipped in seven digs on the defensive end in a 3-1 win over the Bears.
With the help of Barber, the Golden Eagles secured the fourth seed and will face fifth-seeded Oswego Nov. 7 at 6 pm in New Paltz. The winner faces SUNYAC leader and tournament host New Paltz the following day at 6 pm and the championship is scheduled for Nov. 9 at noon.
Brockport has two home non-conference matchups this week on Tuesday when they face Nazareth at 7 pm and Friday at 6 pm against Keuka. Remember to follow Ellsworth on twitter @EllsworthEagle to stay up to date on all your Golden Eagles scores and awards.
