Sophomore Clifton Lyerly (Inwood, NY/Lawrence) has been named The College at Brockport Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 23. Lyerly helped lead Brockport Men’s Basketball team to a 2-1 record through the week which pushed them into the fourth seed of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament.
Lyerly’s arguably best game of the season came in the Golden Eagles regular season finale, in which Brockport was in need of a victory over Potsdam to give the team a chance at a home playoff game. Lyerly came out strong in the game, picking and choosing his spots with laser like precision. He scored a team leading 19 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor, while also drawing several fouls leading to 9-of-11 shooting from the line. Lyerly also tied for the team lead with four assists during the 97-59 win over Potsdam.
The night before the big win over Potsdam, Brockport’s offense struggled to get much going against the SUNYAC No. 1 seed Plattsburgh but Lyerly was still able to top the double digit point barrier with 11 points in total. Lyerly also added two assists and two steals on the game.
In a tightly fought defensive battle, Lyerly contributed solid defense on a night that the Golden Eagles held Cortland to 26% shooting for the game. He finished the game with six points and four assists, helping Brockport secure a pivotal win over the Red Dragons. The win over Cortland helped propel the team into the SUNYAC Tournament as the Red Dragons were left out of the tournament after Oneonta upset Buffalo State to claim the final seed.
Oneonta’s win over Buffalo State also helped to secure a home playoff game for the Golden Eagles. Brockport leaped past Buffalo State in the standings to claim the four seed and will now host the Bengals Tuesday night at 7 pm in the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium on the campus of Brockport.
