Samuel Taft (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady Christian) has been named The College at Brockport Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending May 4. Taft was a major factor in Brockport Men’s Track and Field team taking its fifth State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship over the weekend.
Taft won two events individually and shared another championship with his 4x100-meter relay partners on his way to being named All-SUNYAC First Team. Individually he took first in the 110-meter hurdles and also the 400-meter hurdles as well.
Taft runs like a ship on calm waters, he sails over hurdles like the obstacle doesn’t even faze him. In the 110-meter hurdles he sprinted the entire distance with ultimate precision and strode through the finish line at 14.62 seconds, beating out the nearest competitor by 0.35 seconds.
The 400-meter hurdles are a struggle for most athletes with the speed, endurance and strength required to not only complete the event, but to complete it in as quick a fashion as possible. However Taft excelled at this event too, displaying his superior athletic ability than the common man with a time of 52.87 seconds.
The 4x100-meter race proved to be one of the most exciting events over the weekend during the SUNYAC Championship held here at Brockport. The Golden Eagles relay team consisting of Cameron Shaughnessy, Dorian Hayden, Taft and Zachary Brown made things interesting. Going into the final 100-meters of the race Brockport trailed by a slim margin to Buffalo State but Brown used a great burst of speed to pass the Bengal runner and claim another title for the Golden Eagles!
Brockport travels this weekend to Albany for the Purple and Gold Last Chance Meet prior to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships the following weekend.
