Walt Peterson was hired as an assistant coach for the Golden Eagles in 2002. Coaching since 1966, he developed a successful program at one of New York State's smallest high schools (Avoca Central) during his 31 years there. In addition, he worked as Gene Mills’ assistant in developing the outstanding program at Phoenix High School from1998-2006.

Peterson served as a Section V Class C and D chair for 22 years and County and League chair for 21 years.

In 1998, Peterson was inducted into the Section V Wrestling Hall of Fame, and in 2007, he was inducted into the New York Upstate Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Peterson will enter his 49th year of coaching at the onset of the 2015-16 season. In 2015, he was inducted into the New York State Collegiate Wrestling Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport of wrestling.
