Freshman
Melanie Melewski (New Baltimore, NY/R-C-S) broke the school record in the 200-yard breaststroke and then helped the 200-yard Medley Relay break the school record as well as The College at Brockport Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving teams opened the 2011-12 season with a dual meet against Fredonia Saturday at the James B. Fulton Natatorium in Brockport.
The Brockport men won a thrilling 150-149 decision and Fredonia took the women's competition with a 161.5-136.5 final score.
For the Brockport men, Brockport (1-0) opened strong with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay as
Cody Burns (King Ferry, NY/Southern Cayuga),
Chris O'Connell (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North), Ken Smith (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) and
Chris Heckman (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) swam a 1:43.12 to win the opening race of the event.
O'Connell,
Marc Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) and
Jake Deubel (Melbourne, Australia/Huntingtower) finished 1-2-3 in the 100-yard breaststroke, Nate Dubois (Mendon, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and
Joe Klafehn (Hilton, NY/Hilton) finished first and second respectively in the 50-yard freestyle, Dubois won the 100-yard freestyle, Smith captured the 100-yard butterfly and the Golden Eagles finished the meet with Dubois, Klafehn, Smith and
Jake Place (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) winning the 400-yard medley relay to win the team scoring for the afternoon.
For the women, Melewski was one of the stars for the Golden Eagles setting one school record and helping set another with a relay. Her time of 2:35.00 in the 200-yard breaststroke was the fastest in school history and the relay made up of
Erin Luke (Latham, NY/Shaker), Melewski,
Rachel Coia (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) and
Amy Jessmer (Albion, NY/Albion) set the new school standard in the 200-yard medley relay with a winning time of 1:56.71.
Melewski also won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.30, Luke won the 50-yard freestyle, Jessmer won the 100-yard freestyle and
Paige Whitney (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) took the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle race.
Sarah Eisenmenger (North Rose, NY/North Rose-Wolcott) was the first place finisher in the 100-yard butterfly,
Alanna Blasting (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) was first in the 200-yar individual medley while the relay of Jessmer,
Hannah Sonner (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post West), Whitney and Luke took the top spot in the 400-yard freestyle relay to finish the day.
“I was very happy with the way we started the season,” said head coach Jack Stover. “We competed as a team with some swimmers competing in events that are not their best but did so to help the team. The energy and excitement in the pool was at a level we have not seen in a while here at Brockport. This is a great way to start the season and gives us a great level to build on for the rest of the season.”
