BOXSCORE
Freshman
Kevin Dorn (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hallow Hills East) stole the ball from a defender and fired home the game-winning goal with 45 seconds remaining in a thrilling 3-2 conference win for The College at Brockport men's soccer team over Fredonia at A. Huntley Parker Field on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles improve to 5-2-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the SUNYAC, and are tied with Geneseo at the top of the conference. Fredonia drops to 6-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
The game's first goal came at 8:25 into the contest when Brockport's
Chris O'Gorman (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) slipped a pass through a couple defenders to freshman
Paul Altobelli (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili). Altobelli struck a shot from about 10 yards out on the left that beat the goalie on the opposite side. The goal was Altobelli's second goal of the year, having scored on Friday.
With about 19 minutes left in the first half, O'Gorman had a shot from inside the six-yard box blocked to save a sure goal.
The Blue Devils knotted the game at one in the 32nd minute, when sophomore Luke Tylutki headed in a Tyler Williams corner kick for his third marker of the season.
Brockport had one more good scoring chance in the first half, as junior
Brian Duffy (Hilton, NY/Hilton) nailed the crossbar with a free kick from about 20 yards out.
The Golden Eagles out-shot the Blue Devils 17-7 and four yellow cards were doled out in the contest. In the 63rd minute, sophomore
Kevin Nichols (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) found a hole in the defense and got a head on a free kick by senior
Aubrey Brown (Marathon, NY/Marathon) that found the back of the net. It was Nichols' first goal of the season.
Brockport held its lead until 88:05 in the game, when Williams scored from just inside the 18-yard-box. Fredonia junior Ryan Smith hurled a long throw-in to the box and Williams found an open part of the net to tie the game up at two.
With under a minute remaining, Altobelli dribbled the ball up the left side and sent a cross into the box. A Fredonia defender corralled the ball, but Dorn took it away and squeaked a shot past Fredonia goalie Bobby McGinnis for his first goal of the season and a 3-2 lead with 45 seconds left.
“When you play in the SUNYAC, anything can happen,” head coach
Gary LaPietra said. “
Paul Altobelli,
Kevin Nichols and
Kevin Dorn are all new this year, and they came up huge for us in today's game.”
A long flip-throw by Golden Eagles senior
Brian Gildemeyer (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) put the ball deep into Fredonia territory and sealed the game for Brockport.
Senior goalie
Kyle Sauln (Rochester, NY/Rush Henrietta) earned the win in net for Brockport, making two saves. McGinnis also registered two stops for the Blue Devils.
The Golden Eagles looks to remain undefeated in the SUNYAC when they plays host Oneonta at 1 pm on Friday.
