Bobby Ross (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and Chris O'Gorman (Wading River, NY/Wading River-Shoreham) both scored in the final regular season game of their careers as The College at Brockport beat Potsdam 7-3 on a windy Saturday morning for Senior Day.
The wind was whipping and the temperature dropped, but the Golden Eagles did not let the weather affect them. Brockport scored seven goals in 90:00 minutes, the most goals scored in a game since September 2, 2009 when the Golden Eagles defeated Cazenovia 7-0.
Brockport got out to a quick start, scoring the first goal of the game at 22:53. Sophomore Peter DiLorenzo (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville) found the back of the net with a header off of a corner kick pass from Matthew Roorda (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute).
The Bears answered right back with a goal of their own at 25:14. Eduardo Figueroa rifled the ball across the box to a cutting Alex Minsker who shot the ball in past a diving Casey Sullivan (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa).
Two minutes later, DiLorenzo recorded his second goal of the game and 12th goal of the season. Collin Goettel (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) sent a great pass that got through the Potsdam defense to DiLorenzo who cut onto the ball and ripped a shot into the corner of the net.
Ross pushed the Brockport lead to two with a goal at 35:23. David LaPietra (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) sent in a text book pass off of a corner kick right to Ross who was able to head it in right pass the Bears goalkeeper.
Minutes later, Nick Cafarelli (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) scored his first goal of the season on almost the same exact play. At 37:59, LaPietra sent in another great pass that Cafarelli headed into the back of the goal.
The Golden Eagles made a final push in the last minute before halftime. Brockport took advantage of a Potsdam defense back on its heels and tallied a fifth goal with just three seconds left on the board. Ryan Phillips (Hamlin, NY/Brockport) was able to deflect a throw in from Ross that traveled to the right goal post. Zack Thomas (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) got a foot on the ball and redirected it into the net for his first career goal.
Heading into the second half, the Golden Eagles put Max Drexler (Rochester, NY/Greece Olypmia) into goal. Drexler had his work cut out for him as the wind continued to pick up, greatly affecting the balls direction.
Potsdam tallied the first goal of the second half at the 50 minute mark. Alex Minsker found Alessio Vitale cutting across the box and hit him with a great pass.
Dan Turchan (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) scored Brockport's sixth goal of the game at 66:49. LaPietra earned his third assist of the game after chipping the ball over the defense and into the box. Turchan was there with the finish, recording his first goal of the season.
Potsdam continued to fight on offense, despite being down 6-2. The Bears struck with a goal at 76:08 as Chris Schrum headed the ball into the net off of a pass from Stephan Auyer.
O'Gorman put the final goal of the game into the net at 82:09, giving Brockport their seventh goal. O'Gorman notched his fifth goal of the season with a finish in front of the net from a pass by Mark Sylvia (Northville, NY/Broadalbin-Perth).
The Bears finished the game with a slight 18-17 advantage in total shots, while the Golden Eagles held a 10-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Sullivan earned his 10th victory of the season, recording 5 saves in 45:00. Drexler finished out the game for Brockport, recording four saves.
The seven goals scored against Potsdam is the most goals scored against a State University of New York Athletic Conferenec (SUNYAC) opponent since October 5, 2007 when the Golden Eagles beat Morrisville 11-0.
With the win, the Golden Eagles close out their regular season in third place in the SUNYAC. Potsdam will travel back to Brockport on Saturday as the Golden Eagles will host the Bears in the first round of SUNYAC playoffs. The time is still TBA.
