Swimming & Diving Sweeps Buffalo State

Brockport divers qualify for Division III Nationals Zone Qualifier

Lydia Allen was one of two Brockport divers to hit NCAA Regional qualifying marks against Buffalo State

Freshman Gabriel Arias (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) and junior Lydia Allen (Cortland, NY/Cortland) each hit qualifying standards in diving to earn a spot at the NCAA Zone Regional meet in February with a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The duo led The College at Brockport Swimming & Diving teams to a sweep of Buffalo State Saturday at the James B. Fulton Natatorium in Brockport.

The Brockport men (3-3) won by a 144-120 score and the women (4-2) scored a 153-120 victory over the Bengals.

Allen won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events in the meet and posted a score of 403.9 in 11 dives at the 1-meter level to qualify. Arias won the 3-meter competition and also hit a score of 454.7 with 11 dives at 3-meters for his qualifying score and a new pool record.

The Brockport women jumped out to an early lead with wins in four of the first five events. Taylor Schaffert (Lockport, NY/Lockport) teamed with Melanie Melewski (New Baltimore, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk), Rachel Coia (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) and Erin Luke (Latham, NY/Shaker) for a win in the 400-yardMedley Relay before Hannah Sonner (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post West) won the first of two events with a victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:51.97.Schaffert was first in the 100-yard backstroke with a 1:02.52 and Melewski was the top finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:08.16.

The Brockport men captured first in the 400-yard Medley Relay with Eric Zawislak (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield), Matthew Panebianco (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone), Austin Moyer (Newport News, VA/Woodside) and Dustin Wurster (Buffalo, NY/West Seneca West) with a 3:52.78. Panebianco added a win in the 100-yard breaststroke and was second in the 200-yard breaststroke while Moyer won the 200-yard butterfly, was second in the 50-yard freestyle and was the top finisher in the 200-yard Individual Medley. Wurster was the top finisher in both the 100-yard and 50-yard freestyle events for the Golden Eagles.

Schaffert added individual wins in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle races while Melewski was the 200-yard breaststroke winner and the top finisher in the 200-yard Individual Medley for Brockport. Alanna Blasting (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) was second in the 200-yard butterfly and first in the 100-yard butterfly.

Nik Von Stackelberg (Alfred, NY/Alfred-Almond) won the 200-yard backstroke and the 500-yard freestyle while Kevin Flynn (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem) was the top finisher in the 100-yard butterfly.
