The Golden Eagles lost to Fredonia on Friday night

Melanie Melewski had three first place finishes against Fredonia

Melanie Melewski (New Baltimore, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) and Taylor Schaffert (Lockport, NY/Lockport) each recorded three first place finishes, but The College at Brockport men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to Fredonia on Senior Night Friday at Brockport.

Against a strong Fredonia team, the Brockport women fell 129-111 and the men fell 171.5-66.5.

The women swam well in the relays throughout the night. The Golden Eagles started out the night with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. Schaffert and Melewski earned their first top spot of the night, teaming up with Rachel Coia (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) and Erin Luke (Latham, NY/Shaker) easily with a time of 1:51.64, over seven seconds faster than second place.

Brockport was also successful in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Schaffert, along with Coia, Holly Jackson (West Falls, NY/East Aurora) and Amy Jessmer (Albion, NY/Albion) took first place with a time of 1:42.15, just edging out the Blue Devils.

Schaffert's other first place win came in her best event the 200-yard backstroke. Schaffert finished first with a time of 2:12.42.

Melewski's second and third wins of the night came in the 200-yard IM and the 200-yard breaststroke. In the 200-yard IM, Melewski finished in first with a time of 2:15.24 and her time of 2:26.97 in the 200-yard breaststroke put her on top by nearly six seconds.

Luke earned her second victory with a win in the 50-yard freestyle. She finished in the top spot with a time of 25.38. Luke also recorded a second place victory in the 200-yard freestyle, reaching the finish in 56.37.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Jackson took second place with a time of 2:07.20. Also recording a second place finish was Alanna Blasting (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:22.33, less than a tenth of a second behind the top spot.

Representing the Golden Eagles in diving, Lydia Allen (Cortland, NY/Cortland) recorded a second place finish in the 1-meter dive against some tough competition. Allen finished with a score of 249.40.

On the men's side, Nik Von Stackelberg (Alfred, NY/Alfred-Almond) continued to race strong for Brockport. Von Stackelberg finished the night with two wins. In the 1000-yard freestyle, Von Stackelberg flew past competition, finishing over 13 seconds ahead of second place with a time of 10:26.36. In the 500-yard freestyle, Von Stackelberg once again swam right past his competition, finishing in first with a time of 4:58.88.

Dustin Wurster (Buffalo, NY/West Seneca West) had a great 50-yard freestyle race. He finished just behind a Fredonia swimmer for second place with a time of 22.30. Wurster was also the top finisher in the 100-yard freestyle coming in third place with a time of 50.85.

Austin Moyer (Newport News, VA/Woodside) recorded two second place finishes throughout the night. Moyer swam a 2:07.71 in the 200-yard butterfly and 1:47.72 in the 200-yard freestyle.

Brockport finished both relays in second place. In the 200-yard medley relay, Erick Zawislak (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Wheatfield), Matthew Panebianco (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone), Nathan Mart (Hanover, PA/Southwestern) and Moyer teamed up for a time of 1:42.58. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Chris Heckman (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa), Wurster, Von Stackelberg and Zawisklak finished in 1:31.92.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday for their final meet before conference championships. Brockport takes on Geneseo at the Geneseo Invitational starting at 12 pm.
