Junior Taylor Schaffert (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and senior Melanie Melewski (New Baltimore, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) each won three events in the process of leading The College at Brockport Women's Swimming and Diving team to a 175-115 victory over SUNY Potsdam in Brockport's first home swim meet of the year Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Gabriel Arias (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) put together an outstanding display of dives for the men's team as they dropped the meet to Potsdam 165-126.
Schaffert won three individual events, placing first in the 100-yard backstroke, 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke. In the 100-yard backstroke she finished nearly five seconds faster than the nearest competitor with a time of 1:02.51 and in the 200-yard backstroke she almost finished 30 seconds prior to the nearest Bear.
Melewski scored two individual wins as well as a medley relay. She won the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke while also helping Brockport secure the win in the 200-yard medley relay. Sophomore Holly Jackson (West Falls, NY/East Aurura), Melewski, senior Rachel Coia (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) and freshman Mary Jane Leja (Auburn, NY/Auburn) combined their efforts to finish 1:54.06 in the medley relay, placing first and eight seconds in front of Potsdam.
Also placing first for Brockport's women swimmers were Leja in the 200-yard freestyle, senior Alanna Blasting (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) in the 200-yard butterfly, Jackson in the 100-yard freestyle and freshman Ameera Bhanji (Wappengers Falls, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) in the 100-yard butterfly.
The women's diving team dominated the two events. Senior Lydia Allen (Cortland, NY/Cortland) won the one meter diving with a 242.9 score with freshman Kate Nau (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) placing second. In the three meter event, Nau was the top diver with a score of 209.75, just a few points in front of teammate Meghann Kilgallon (Binghamton, NY/Windsor).
Arias swept the competition placing first in both the one and three meter dives for the men's team. In the one meter dive he scored 248.45 and in the three meter his final score was 257.00, more than 100 points better than his competition.
Sophomore Austin Moyer (Newport News, VA/Woodside) dominated the pool, winning three events individually. He won the 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley. Moyer was more than five seconds ahead of all his competitors in all of his individual events. Senior Chris Heckman (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) was also had a first place finish in the 100-yard butterfly.
The Golden Eagles have another home swim meet next weekend against Oswego November 22 at 1 pm in the James B. Fulton Natatorium.
