Brockport splits meet with Oswego, as women win third straight

Lydia Allen sets personal best during the three meter diving event.

Senior diver Lydia Allen (Cortland, NY/Cortland) swept the diving competition during The College at Brockport Women's Swimming and Diving 178-112 home win over Oswego Saturday afternoon in the James B. Fulton Natatorium. Sophomores Nik Von Stackelberg (Alfred, NY/Alfred-Almond) and Austin Moyer (Newport News, VA/Woodside) had incredible afternoons for the men's squad but the team dropped a close 158-140 decision.

Brockport women's (3-1) senior diver Allen won the one meter diving event with a score of 236.90 and set a personal best during the three meter event with a score of 223.45. Freshman teammate Kate Nau (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) placed second in both events scoring 203.85 in the one meter and a 207.15 in the three meter dive.

Also winning multiple events for the Brockport women were seniors Melanie Melewski (New Baltimore, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) and Taylor Schaffert (Lockport, NY/Lockport). Melewski won both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events, while Schaffert won the 50-yard free and 200-yard backstroke.

Melewski finished the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.36 and dominated the 200-yard event, finishing more than 20 seconds ahead of the nearest opponent with a time of 2:30.51.

Schaffert flew through the water in the 50-yard free, finishing in 0:25.07 more than a second ahead of second place teammate Holly Jackson (West Falls, NY/East Aurora). Schaffert also placed just ahead of Jackson in the 200-yard back with a time of 2:16.37.

Melewski and Schaffert also helped Brockport place first in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard free relay. Schaffert, Melewski, Rachel Coia (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) and Mary Jane Leja (Auburn, NY/Auburn) started the swim meet off with a bang finishing first in the 200-yard medley relay, with a time of 1:51.80. Schaffert, Leja, Melewski and Jackson led Brockport to a win in the 400-yard free relay, finishing nearly 20 seconds ahead of Oswego with a time of 3:45.98.

Brockport's women showed a great range of versatility placing first individually in four other swimming events. Leja won the 200-yard free with a time of 2:03.66, more than four seconds faster than the quickest Laker. Freshman Ameera Bhanji (Wappengers Falls, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) finished the 200-yard fly in 2:25.30, taking first by more than a second. Coia placed first in the 100-yard free, breaking the minute barrier with a 0:57.29 finish, with both her splits taking less than 30 seconds. Freshman Ellie Jones won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:25.45.

Brockport's men (0-4) were led by the swimming of Von Stackelberg and Moyer. Both Von Stackelberg and Moyer won three individual events and also led Brockport to victory in a relay.

Von Stackelberg won the 1000-yard free, 200-yard backstroke, 500-yard free and helped Brockport win the 400-yard free relay. He won the 1000-yard free by nearly 30 seconds, finishing in 10:26.93. In the 200-yard back he scored a victory with a time of 2:06.62. He finished nearly five seconds ahead of the nearest Laker in the 500-yard free, scoring victory with a time of 5:03.59. In the 400-yard free relay, Brockport pushed ahead of Oswego for the one second difference behind the swimming of Von Stackelberg, Erick Zawislak (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield), Brett Cohen (Lynbrook, NY/Hewlett) and Dustin Wurster (Buffalo, NY/West Seneca West).

Moyer dominated the 200-yard distance, winning the free, fly and individual medley as well as contributing to Brockport's win in the medley relay. He finished the free in 1:50.21, the fly in 2:04.04 and the individual medley in 2:03.88. Zawislak, Chris Heckman (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) and Wurster teamed with Moyer in the medley relay narrowly beating Oswego with a time of 1:41.37.

Both Zawislak and Wurster won individual events by less than a second. Zawislak won the 100-yard backstroke with a 0:57.37 time and Wurster won the 50-yard free with a 0:22.24 time.
