Golden Eagles defeat Western New England and Worcester Polytechnic

Cole Tristram scored a key pin in teh victory over WPI

Senior Paul Glover (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) won three matches with two wins coming on pins leading The College at Brockport Wrestling team to two dual wins in three matches Saturday afternoon at the Western New England University Quad meet in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Glover, ranked No. 4 in the country at 197 pounds, earned a 5-2 decision over Shane Parcel from Roger Williams College who is ranked #15 in the country and then easily knocked off opponents from Western New England and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) with pins in 2:26 and 2:39 respectively.

Brockport dropped a 24-14 dual decision to Roger Williams. The Golden Eagles are tied for #13 in the latest team national rankings and Roger Williams is currently tied for #18 in the same rankings. The Golden Eagles rebounded with a dominating 42-6 win over Western New England and then came from behind winning the final two bouts of the day to post a 24-18 win over WPI.

Against Roger Williams, James McCabe (Ronkonkoma, NY/Connetquot) won a 4-2 decision at 133 pounds and Jordan Dyer (Chenango Forks, NY/Chenango Forks) won an 11-5 decision at 149 pounds.

The Golden Eagles took advantage of forfeits at 125 and 133 to start the match against Western New England while Peter Ottiviano III (Marlboro, NJ/Colts Neck) took a 9-6 decision at 141 before Dyer registered seven takedowns before posting a technical fall at 149. Lewis Cucchiara (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) scored a major decision 14-4 win at 157 before Brockport earned another forfeit win at 165.

Pete Hailer (East Milton, MA/East Milton) and Sebastian Randazzo (Syosset, NY/Syosset) each posted decisions before Glover closed out the scoring with his pin in 2:26. Brockport forfeited the heavyweight bout to end the match.

The most exciting dual of the day was next as Brockport needed to post two late pins to defeat a pesky WPI team. Brockport won the two opening bouts as Asher Kramer (Sloatsburg, NY/Suffern) posted a 3-1 decision at 125 and McCabe won a 4-0 decision for an early 6-0 Brockport lead.

After a 6-0 decision loss at 141 pounds, Dyer won a close 5-4 decision and the Golden Eagles had a 9-3 advantage. Cucchiara posted an 8-5 decision before WPI came back with a decision win at 165 and a major decision at 174 to narrow the gap to 12-10.

WPI earned a pin at 184 to take a 16-12 lead in the match setting up Glover and heavyweight Cole Tristram (Newton Falls, NY/Clifton Fine) to come from behind.

Glover registered a takedown early in the first round and allowed an escape for a 2-1 lead. Less than a minute later, Glover took his opponent down again but this time moved into a cradle position and earned the pin at 2:38 of the round giving Brockport six points and an 18-16 lead in the match.

Needing a win to seal the victory, Tristram came out fast in an aggressive match but was taken down to fall behind 2-0 midway through the first period. An escape left the score at 2-1 heading into the second period.

WPI deferred it option to start the second period and Tristram opted for the down position to start the period. Tristram reversed his position taking a 3-2 lead and then allowed an escape to even the score at 3-3. Before the wrestlers could move back toward the center of the mat, Tristram scored a quick takedown and had his opponent in a decisive headlock position for the next several seconds before finishing the match with a pin at 3:58 and the 24-16 win for Brockport.
