Box Score Freshman David Medina (Rochester, NY/Brighton) dribbled past two defenders and fired a shot past the St. Lawrence University goalkeeper 54 seconds into the second overtime session Saturday leading The College at Brockport Men's Soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Saints on Bob Boozer Field at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium in Brockport.
The overtime win for Brockport (3-0-3) is the second consecutive overtime win and the sixth consecutive overtime game for the Golden Eagles.
Both teams had chances to score in regulation and Brockport had a goal nullified by a goalkeeper interference call in the first half. St. Lawrence (3-2-0) held a 14-5 shots advantage in regulation play and each team was credited with a shot in overtime. Brockport's lone shot was the game-winner.
Junior Peter DiLorenzo (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville) had a few chances to score and it was his header that ended up in the back of the goal in the 18th minute that looked to be the first goal of the game but was overturned with a foul called against the Golden Eagles instead.
With 30 minutes left in regulation, the junior broke free from the midfield area and fired a hard shot from just outside the 18-yard box that sailed within a foot of the cross bar and over the goal.
Late in the second half, St. Lawrence applied intense pressure but junior Casey Sullivan (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) came up with three big saves to preserve the tie and force the overtime periods.
In the 95th minute, the Saints had another good opportunity but the shot from outside the box deflected off the crossbar and out of play for a Brockport goal kick.
In the second overtime, the Brockport defense forced a turnover near midfield and freshman Collin Melveney (Clay, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) fed a pass to Medina streaking down the left side of the field. The freshman touched a dribble past one defender and out raced a second defender into the box before firing a shot past the St. Lawrence keeper for the game-winning goal.
Sullivan finished with nine saves for his fourth shutout in six games.
