The College at Brockport Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving squads excelled in the James B. Fulton Natatorium Saturday afternoon on senior day defeating Buffalo State 187-68 in the women's bracket and 161-125 in the men's bracket on the Brockport campus.
Seniors Taylor Schaffert (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and Melanie Melewski (New Baltimore, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) won multiple events for the Golden Eagles individually while also helping secure a couple relay race victories for the women's team. On the men's side, senior Chris Heckman (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) won the 100-yard butterfly and also teamed up with fellow senior Dustin Wurster (Buffalo, NY/West Seneca West) to win a relay.
Schaffert won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.68, nearly 14 seconds ahead of the closest Bengal, and she also won the 100-yard freestyle finishing in 55.67 seconds. Melewski won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:30.06 and also won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.39. In addition seniors Rachel Coia (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) and Alanna Blasting (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) won the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley respectively. Senior diver Lydia Allen (Cortland, NY/Cortland) also won the one meter dive with a score of 254.15.
Also winning multiple events for the Green and Gold's women was sophomore Mary Jane Leja (Auburn, NY/Auburn) who won the 1000-yard freestyle and the 50-yard freestyle. Ameera Bhanji (Wappengers Falls, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) was the first to finish the 100-yard butterfly and Meghann Kilgallon (Binghamton, NY/Windsor) had the top score of 261.55 in the three meter dive.
Brockport finished first in the 400-yard medley relay with the team of Schaffert, Ellie Jones (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon), Coia and Holly Jackson (West Falls, NY/East Aurora). The Golden Eagles 400-yard medley relay team completed the race in 4:14.77. Schaffert, Leja, Jackson and Melewski also teamed up to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:43.46, more than 15 seconds ahead of Buffalo State.
For the men's side, Nik Von Stackelberg (Alfred, NY/Alfred-Almond) and Austin Moyer (Newport News, VA/Woodside) won multiple events. Stackelberg won both the 1000-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle. Moyer was the top swimmer in the 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard butterfly. In each win for Moyer, he was more than five seconds ahead of the competition.
Eric Zawislak (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) finished the 200-yard backstroke in 2:11.05 to claim first place in the event. Gabriel Arias (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) won both diving events for the men's team. He posted a 263.40 in the one meter dive and a 294.25 in the three meter dive. Arias' score for the three meter dive was more than 90 points ahead of the second place score.
Brockport travels to Fredonia next week for a 1 pm swimming and diving meet.
