Men's Soccer Ties SUNYAC's Buffalo State 2-2

Box Score

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport Men's Soccer team opened up its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play against Buffalo State Friday afternoon and bombarded the Bengals with a constant offensive attack finishing the contest with a 2-2 tie on Bob Boozer Field.

Brockport (5-2-1, 0-0-1 SUNYAC) outshot the Bengals (5-1-1, 0-0-1 SUNYAC) in every each half and continued to outshoot the man-down Bengals in the two overtime periods of play. On the game the Golden Eagles held a distinct 20-9 shot advantage while Buffalo State packed in its defensive efforts after one Bengal was removed from the game following his second yellow card, warranting a red card and ejection.

In a highly entertaining game with a raucous crowd cheering on the Golden Eagles, Buffalo State struck first with a goal in the first ten minutes of play. However Brockport quickly answered back utilizing a foul deep in the Bengal territory.

Brockport sent Collin Goettel to fire in the free kick and the senior responded with a blazing shot too hot to handle, tying the score at 1-1 in the 16th minute of play.

The Golden Eagles gained control of the action early in the second half as Peter DiLorenzo netted his sixth goal of the season. Once again Goettel came through in the clutch sending a pass in the direction of DiLorenzo that was deflected by a Bengal defender. DiLorenzo quickly controlled the ball, accelerated past the Bengal defense around the perimeter of the goalkeeper box and sent a ball into the back of the net during the 49th minute of play.

During the 75th minute of action, Brockport was whistled for a foul less than a yard outside of the goalie box. Brockport built a wall directly in front of the Bengal attacker forcing him to shoot it wide of them but the ball was deflected by a Golden Eagle defender and sent in a direction opposite of Brockport's goalie Casey Sullivan.

With less than five minutes to play in regulation, the Brockport was given a big break when the Bengal player to knot up the game at 2-2 was whistled for his second yellow card and removal from the game. The Golden Eagles nearly scored minutes later when Quintin Volpe streaked past the Bengals defenders to corral a pass for what seemed to be a one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper but just before he could rip a shot off the play was ruled offsides.

The Golden Eagle opportunities did not stop there as the pressure continued to mount for the Bengals defenders in the overtime periods. Brockport booted seven shots in the two 10 minute periods compared to Buffalo State's zero.

Volpe collected three of those overtime shots in overtime, including a header before an acrobatic save that was collected by Chris Aherne and sent on net for another save in the first set of extra time. Early in the second overtime period, Goettel sent a corner kick in towards the goal. The ball trickled out and found the right foot of Volpe. He sent the ball low towards the net but another diving save was needed to preserve the score.

Brockport returns to action tomorrow with another SUNYAC game at home against Fredonia at 1 p.m. in Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium.
