BROCKPORT, N.Y. – In their final home game of 2016 regular season, The College at Brockport men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking contest to State University of New York Athletic Confernce (SUNYAC) rivals SUNY Cortland, 2-1.
The Golden Eagles fall 2-9-2 on the season and are 1-5-1 in SUNYAC play while the Red Dragons are now 12-2 in 2016 and have a 7-1 mark in league action.
Brockport got on the board early, when at the four-minute mark,
Quintin Volpe was fouled in the box, earning a penalty shot, which he buried in the lower right corner for the early 1-0 lead.
The Green and Gold defense worked hard to hold off a tough Cortland squad, and were successful down to the last two minutes of the half, when the Red Dragons worked in the equalizer, to take a 1-1 tie into the half.
Out of the break, the Green and Gold defense continued their stout play, holding their opponents scoreless through the 79th minute. On a corner opportunity, Brockport saw the Red Dragons capitalize, and fell behind 2-1 after the Cortland score. Despite many looks, the Golden Eagles were unable to convert, ultimately falling 2-1.
Brockport worked for 12 shots in the contest, with seven on goal and had five corner opportunities.
Ryan Cassidy got the start, seeing 90 minutes of action and making nine saves on the day.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action when they wrap up the regular season next weekend on the road. On Oct. 21, Brockport will take on Plattsburgh State, followed by a Saturday matchup on Oct. 22 against SUNY Potsdam.
