FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Golden Eagles bats remained scorching hot Sunday morning in their final game in North Carolina leading The College at Brockport Baseball team to a 16-1 victory over Farmingdale State in JP Riddle Stadium.
Brockport (5-0) scored more than 10 runs for the third consecutive game as the Golden Eagles tallied 19 hits. Sam McCumiskey threw a gem of a game working out of a fifth inning jam to earn the victory as he threw five scoreless innings.
With a large lead in the fifth inning McCumiskey struck out the first batter in the bottom of the fifth. A walk sandwiched by two singles loaded the bases for the Rams with only one out. McCumiskey reared back and proceeded to fire three straight fastballs by the Rams three hole hitter for out number two. He followed the strikeout with a grounder to shortstop Greg Ruddy who flipped the ball to Wesley Burghardt for the final out of the inning as McCumiskey's day came to an end with five scoreless innings and five strikeouts.
The Green and Gold put up four runs in the second inning as Luke Gilbert's line drive single to right field scored all three base runners Dave Battel, Paul Ludden and Josh Martin. Gilbert advanced to second on a fielding error by the right fielder and then to third on the relay to home plate. Dane Cala hit a sacrifice fly to center field putting Brockport ahead 4-0.
Gilbert knocked in two more runs during the third inning sending a hard liner through the left side of the infield which scored Battel and Chris Davis.
Davis doubled in the next two innings spraying the ball to both gaps knocking in three runs himself while Martin's two strike single in the fourth helped Brockport to its third straight game of 10 runs or more. Martin knocked in Davis and Wesley Burghardt giving the Golden Eagles the 10-0 advantage.
Davis and Martin both finished the game with three hits as Martin went a perfect 3-for-3 on the day. Gilbert led the team with six runs batted in on two base hits. Eleven Golden Eagles finished with a hit against Farmingdale including Cala, Drew DeBlasiis, Liam O'Leary, Burghardt, Mike Carson, Davis, Martin, Ryan Juergens, Charlie Serino, Ludden and Gilbert.
Ben Barnes, Kyle Perez, Casey Piazza and Nick Jerolimov combined to close out the game pitching four innings surrendering three hits while striking out three.
