OSWEGO, N.Y. – The College at Brockport Baseball team jumped on the board first but was unable to hold the lead eventually falling to the nationally ranked Lakers of Oswego 8-2 on Friday night in the first game of a three game stand on the road during a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) series.
Brockport (16-11 Overall, 7-3 SUNYAC) fell to Oswego (21-3 Overall, 8-2 SUNYAC) as the Lakers jumped ahead of the Golden Eagles in the conference standings with the victory. The Golden Eagles remain in the hunt as they are just a single game behind the Lakers in the SUNYAC standings with two games to go tomorrow.
Right fielder Dave Battel provided the first run of the game when he singled with two outs in the top of the second. Prior to Battel's run scoring single Paul Ludden was hit by a pitch and moved to second a single to left field from third baseman Joe Bender, giving Brockport the 1-0 advantage.
The lead was short lived as No. 6 Oswego answered back after multiple singles and fielder's choices. Things remained tied at 1-all until the bottom of the fourth when an error cost the Golden Eagles the neutral 1-1 score. Oswego was only able to score one run in the fourth off the miscue.
The Lakers took advantage of a fielding lapse in the sixth increasing their lead to 5-1 before tacking on two more in the bottom of the seventh.
Chris Davis got things started in the eighth for Brockport legging out a triple to right centerfield. He scored on a single from Ludden to narrow the gap to 7-2 but Brockport was unable to add any more to its total. In the bottom of the eighth Oswego added another run to conclude the scoring at 8-2.
Davis was an impressive 3-of-4 on the day at the plate as Battel was the other Golden Eagle to pick up multiple hits in the contest with two singles. Brockport finished the day with nine total hits.
Starting pitcher Austin Spindler dropped his first game of his Golden Eagle career as he finished with a quality start of six innings pitched with three earned runs scored. Spindler struck out two batters while walking zero. Senior Kyle Perez made a relief appearance in his hometown of Oswego, throwing two innings allowing two hits and striking out one.
