ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior pitcher Kyle Perez waited four years to make his Golden Eagle debut as a starting pitcher prior to his number being called today in a nonconference game against Ithaca. The Oswego, N.Y. – native did not disappoint as he pitched five innings giving up just four hits and one unearned run but The College at Brockport baseball team was unable to secure his third straight victory as it fell 7-2 Wednesday night.
Brockport (19-16 Overall) trailed after the single run was scored off of Perez in the bottom of the second inning. After a one out double the Bombers scored the first run of the game when Perez was unable to handle a throw from Jack Wallwork at first base.
Following the one run Perez kept Ithaca scoreless for three more innings before exiting the game prior to the start of the sixth inning. Ryan Greco was the first Brockport arm out of the bullpen. Ithaca added three more runs in the sixth before Brockport's offense showed some life.
The Golden Eagles offense waited until the seventh inning to strike. Paul Ludden led the inning off with a single but was thrown out at third base on a relay from right field after Wesley Burghardt's batted ball eluded the Bomber's glove. Brockport's clean up man, Josh Martin, walked on four straight pitches before Dave Battel sent a 1-0 pitch towards the infield hole that the shortstop grabbed but was unable to get him at first as he hustled for an infield single.
With the bases loaded and a 0-2 count after two straight foul balls, Tim Segrue could have easily chased a pitch out of the strike zone. The Bomber's pitcher attempted to get Segrue to swing at multiple pitches out of the zone but Segrue stayed patient in a seven pitch at bat for a run scoring walk.
One batter later, sophomore Jack Wallwork worked with what the pitcher gave him sending an outside pitch through the right side hole to score a run. Ithaca's relay caught Battel at the plate, but the two runs closed the gap to 4-2, in favor of the Bombers.
Jimmy Lovelass entered the game in the seventh to keep the score 4-2. He blanked Ithaca, striking out one while working around a leadoff single.
However Brockport was unable to score again and the Bombers tacked on three more runs in the eighth inning for the final score of 7-2.
The Green and Gold will remain on the road as the team travels to New Paltz this weekend for the final State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) series before the conference tournament gets underway.
