Four Run First Fuels Golden Eagles Over Buffalo State in Senior Day Split

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport softball team used four runs in the first inning to down Buffalo State 5-4 in game one, but their bats were silenced in game two, falling 9-0 in six innings.  The Golden Eagles fall to 19-19 overall and 5-13 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference.  Brockport was officially eliminated from the postseason SUNYAC tournament.

Game One: Brockport 5, Buffalo State 4

The Golden Eagles took advantage of two Bengal errors in the first frame to jump out to a 4-0 lead.  With zero outs and runners on first and second, Morgan Flamholtz reached safely on a bunt and a throwing error by the third basemen, allowing Amanda Yuhas to score.  Lindsay Wachna knocked in Korey Kibling with a single up the middle.  Delaney Buckley drove in Flamholtz and Wachna with a hard hit double to right field to cap off the four run, three hit inning.

Buffalo State had the bases loaded with two in the top of the second but Jaime Berger dug in and fanned the last batter to end the threat.  The Bengals would get one back in the third and two in the fourth to cut Brockport's lead to 4-3.

The Bengals threatened to take the lead in the fifth and sixth inning, getting four runners in scoring position but strong defense from the Golden Eagles kept the score at 4-3 entering the bottom of the sixth.

With two outs and Shannon Allen on second, Shelby Perry singled to right field to bring home Allen and extend the lead to 5-3.  Buffalo State responded with a lead off home run in the top of the seventh but three straight ground outs would seal the win for the Golden Eagles.

Berger went the distance in her career high 13th win of the season.  The senior struck out five while allowing nine hits and four walks.  Wachna finished game one two-for-three at the plate while Yuhas, Kibling, Buckley and Perry each tabbed one hit.

Game Two: Brockport 0, Buffalo State 9 (six innings)

The Bengals jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after two innings, then tabbed three runs in the fourth and two in the sixth to cap off the mercy-rule shortened six-inning contest.

Flamholtz and Wachna tabbed the two lone hits of the game for the Golden Eagles.  Kelsi Nau suffered her fifth loss of the season after striking out two, walking four and allowing 10 hits.

The Golden Eagles fell short of the postseason SUNYAC tournament but will head to Rochester Institute of Technology on Tuesday for a doubleheader set for 3 p.m.
