CORTLAND, N.Y. – Brockport used a four-run seventh inning to take down No. 2 ranked Cortland by a score of 5-4 Saturday afternoon, improving to 12-7 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
Austin Spindler picked up the win, shutting down a dangerous Red Dragon offense by allowing just three runs in six innings pitched.
Brockport got on the board first in the top of the third, taking a 1-0 lead when
Drew DeBlasiis and
Mike D'Eletto strung a couple hits together, putting runners on the corners with one man out.
Dane Cala drove in DeBlasiis from third with a grounder to second, giving Brockport the edge.
Cortland rebounded to score the next three runs of the contest, notching two in the bottom of the third and another in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. That lead would stand until the seventh, when the Golden Eagle offense exploded for four runs on three hits and one error.
Matt Van Allen got the inning started by drawing a leadoff walk, and was pinch-run for by
Tom Kretzler.
Luke Gilbert was up next and laid down a SAC bunt to move Kretzler to second, bringing up
Joe Bender. A passed ball early in the count allowed Kreztler to advance again, and Bender drove him in with an RBI groundout to the shortstop to bring Brockport to within one.
With two outs in the inning and nobody on, DeBlasiis got things started again by laying down a bunt single down the third base line. D'Eletto followed that up with a fly ball to center field that appeared to end the inning, but was awarded first base when catchers interference was called. Brockport capitalized on the opportunity, with Cala driving in his second run of the game to tie things up at 3-3.
Avery Brooks had the big blow in the inning, doubling down the right field line to score two and give Brockport their first lead since the third inning.
Jake Miller came in for one out in the bottom of the seventh, allowing a run that brought Cortland back to within one at 5-4, but
Nick Jerolimov was able to record the final two outs of the inning, allowing Brockport to hold onto the lead.
Brockport had runners in scoring position in the eighth and ninth, but were unable to capitalize, keeping the game within reach for the Red Dragons. It did not matter however, as Jerolimov remained strong through the next two innings, completing his fourth save of the season while allowing just one hit through 2.2 innings of work.
Spindler had one of his best outings of the young season, picking up his second win of the year with his six inning outing. Of the eighteen outs he recorded, twelve came via the ground ball, as the senior was able to keep the Cortland offense in check all afternoon.
Brockport will square off with Cortland again tomorrow with a doubleheader set to begin at noon.
