ONEONTA, N.Y. — The College at Brockport baseball team picked up their fourth straight win on Tuesday, collecting 13 hits and defeating SUNY Oneonta, 5-1. The win brings Brockport to 20-14 on the year and 11-4 in SUNYAC play, while the Red Dragons fall to 14-16 in 2017 and 5-10 in conference play.
Jason Hellwig picked up his third win of the season pitching an eight-inning gem. He allowed one run off four hits, while walking two batters and striking out one.
The Golden Eagles got on the board first, collecting one run off two hits in the second inning.
Tom Kretzler led off with a single up the middle and
Joe Bender drove him in after doubling to centerfield.
Brockport added to the lead in the fourth after Bender hit a single to left center driving in
Lou Miceli, who led off the inning with a double to right center, bringing their lead to 2-0.
Paul Ludden collected his 23rd RBI of the season in the top of the fifth inning, driving in
Jack Wallwork, with a hard hit single up the middle, pushing their lead to 3-0.
Hellwig did not allow a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning, which is also when the Red Dragons would score their only run of the game, a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Brockport's lead would drop to 3-1, but would not be tested for the rest of the game.
Miceli and Bender would drive in one run a piece in the top of the eighth inning. Ludden started the frame by picking up his third hit of the game, a triple to right field. Miceli would drive him in with an RBI single through the left side making the score 4-1. After Kretzler was hit by a pitch, Bender would collect his third RBI of the contest driving a ball to centerfield for a single, scoring
AJ Sgroi.
Nick Jerolimov came in for relief of Hellwig and worked an easy ninth inning to seal the win.
Brockport will look to continue their win streak on Wednesday, April 25 as they host Rochester Institute of Technology in a double header, first pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
