BROCKPORT, N.Y.- The College at Brockport men's soccer team fell to SUNY Cortland Saturday afternoon, by a score of 3-2. Despite today's outcome, the Golden Eagles still secured a spot in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Playoffs, locking in the No. 3 seed, and the right to host the first round of SUNYAC Playoffs.
With the loss, Brockport moves to 11-4-2 overall record and 5-2-2 in conference, while the Red Dragons improve to 14-1-2 overall and 8-1 in conference.
Â
Prior to the game the Golden Eagles honored their three seniors, Quinton Volpe, Connor Desantis and
Dylan Serfis. The College at Brockport thanked these three men for all the hard work and dedication they've put in throughout their four years.
Â
The Red Dragons were the first team on the scoresheet in this matchup, Cortland found the back of the net at 11:46 of the first half. Brockport's goalkeeper
Tautis Poniskaitis, faced 10 shots in the first half, five of which he was forced to make a save on. Brockport looked like they'd have a chance at knotting it up at 34:37, when
Matheus Oliveira went up for a header but the ball rolled wide.
Â
The second half began similar to the first, with Cortland finding an opening in the Golden Eagles defense and scoring their second of the night. Brockport stuck with the game plan and showed no quit, pressuring the Cortland defenders all over their end of the field. Following a yellow card issued to Poniskaitis, the Green and Gold would make a goalie substitution at the 20-minute mark, bringing in Junior
Joseph Romano. Brockport's never say die attitude would pay off at the 81st minute when A.J. Sinclair scored a leaping header off a beautiful corner from
Jeff Hibbard. The comeback kids hit their stride at the 88th minute when Volpe found
Matthew Stefaniw inside the box for a diving header, forcing the game into overtime with the two teams tied at two goals apiece.
Â
Five minutes and forty-seven seconds into the first overtime period the Red Dragons found a loose ball inside the Golden Eagles box to end the game.
Â
The Green and Gold are back in action for their final game of the regular season Tuesday, Oct. 23 when they take on Houghton College on the road. The Golden Eagles will return home for the post-season, as the No. 3 seed, to host the No. 6 seed Plattsburgh State in the opening round of the SUNYAC Playoffs on Oct. 27 at 1 p.m.
