Golden Eagles OT Thriller Ends In Draw

Box Score BROCKPORT, N.Y.- The College at Brockport men's soccer team tied SUNY New Paltz Friday afternoon, by a score of 1-1. With the tie, Brockport moves to 9-2-1 overall record and 4-0-1 in SUNYAC play, while the Hawks move to 8-3-1 on the season and 3-1-1 in league action.

The Golden Eagles entered today's contest with a large target on their back, sitting at number one in the SUNYAC and undefeated in conference play.

The first half saw two evenly matched opponents feeling each other out, with both teams taking chances. It all started with a Hawk forward getting a loose ball behind the Golden Eagle defenders, finding himself all alone with the Green and Gold's netminder Tautis Poniskaitis, but the Brockport goalkeeper came out diving and shut the door. Brockport answered minutes later with an opportunity of their own, Freshman Ayub Jeylani, beat three defenders and let a shot fly from the 18', only to be swallowed up by the Hawks goalie.

The defensive battle continued in the second half, with both teams being held to few chances. Brockport started the half with a string of corner kicks from Quinton Volpe but the Green and Gold would come away empty handed. The Hawks brought offensive pressure at the halfway mark of the second half, with a few good looks on net but Poniskaitis would keep the score tied at nil.

Back and forth play ensued for the next 35 minutes until a Hawks forward stole the ball from a Brockport defender and beat Poniskaitis, taking the lead 1-0. With one-minute left in regulation, it looked as though the Hawks would ruin the Golden Eagles unbeaten streak—that was until Brockport's Matthew Stefaniw, got the ball inside the box and let a laser go, beating the Hawks goalkeeper and tying the game at one goal apiece, forcing the game into extra time.

Brockport entered overtime with momentum on their side, creating the majority offensive opportunities, but after two overtime periods and 110 minutes of soccer a victor could not be crowned.

The Green and Gold will hope to keep their in-conference unbeaten streak alive when their back in action Saturday, Oct. 6 for another SUNYAC matchup against Oneonta at 1 p.m.
