Softball Walks Off For Saturday Sweep

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The College at Brockport softball team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon, including a dramatic seventh inning walk-off victory against Nichols College that capped off a six run comeback. They also defeated Albion College by a score of 5-4 in the opening game of the double-header, evening up their record to 2-2 on the young season.

Game 1 vs. Albion: Win, 5-4
Becky Knorr pitched her second straight gem in the opener, going the distance and picking up her first win of the season. In her seven innings of work, the senior allowed four runs on ten hits while fanning a pair of Albion hitters.

Jessica Koneski led the offense for Brockport in this game, deciding the game with one swing of the bat in the top of the third inning. With one out and the bases loaded of Golden Eagles, Koneski connected with a fastball on the inner half of the plate, and launched a grand slam deep over the left-centerfield wall. The shot was Koneski's first of the season, and gave Brockport a 5-1 lead in the game.

That lead turned out to be enough for Brockport, as Knorr was able to hold Albion scoreless in the next four innings of play. A three run homer in the bottom of the seventh brought the game to within one, but a groundout to the shortstop ended the threat, and the Green and Gold held on for the 5-4 win.

Meghan Cullen led the team with three hits in the game, while six other players also collected hits. Koneski's homer accounted for four of the five runs, with the last one being driven in by Kacie Hubbard who's RBI single scored Alison Missavage in the second inning.

Game 2 vs. Nichols: Win, 10-9
With their backs against the wall trailing by six runs going into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Golden Eagles responded. They scored seven runs in the next three innings, capped off by a walk-off single by Shelby Perry in the seventh that completed the incredible comeback.

The team got one of the runs back in the fifth inning, using three straight singles by Cullen, Lindsay Wachna, and Koneski to close the Nichols lead to 9-4. Morgan Flamholtz nearly cut into the lead more in the next at-bat, but her line drive was caught by the Nichols third baseman, ending the inning.

The bottom of the sixth was the big inning for Brockport, as they exploded for five runs to tie the game at 9-9. Despite only recording one hit in the frame, they were able to capitalize on mistakes from the Bison, using three walks, a hit-by-pitch, and two errors to get themselves right back into the game.

After Leah Graham sent Nichols down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh, Brockport perfectly executed their offense in the bottom half to walk off with the win. Casey Danko led off the inning with a walk, and was bunted over to second by Penny Lenard. Perry was the next batter up, and blasted a line drive single to left field to score Danko from second, completing the comeback.

Graham picked up her first collegiate win in this game, pitching the final two innings for the Golden Eagles without allowing a base runner. Amanda Colon also pitched well for Brockport, striking out three batters in her 3.2 innings of work.

The Golden Eagles will be back on the field bright and early tomorrow as they square off with Salem State and Edgewood College for a pair of games beginning at 9 a.m.
