Softball Scores 36 Runs In Doubleheader Sweep

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The College at Brockport extended their winning streak to four straight with a pair of wins on Wednesday afternoon, defeating both Crown College and SUNY Canton in five inning mercy rule games. The Golden Eagles improve to 7-5 on the year with two games remaining on their Florida spring trip.

Game 1 vs. Crown: Win, 19-4
Casey Danko got the offense rolling right away in the top of the first inning, cranking her first of two home runs in the game, scoring Alexis Ross and giving the Green and Gold an early 2-0 lead. That appeared to be the end of the scoring in the first inning with two outs and nobody on, but Brockport was not done yet. The next eight Golden Eagle hitters reached base either by hit or walk, allowing five more runs to score and giving the team a 7-0 first inning lead.

Kacie Hubbard, Aren Schwab, Alexis Ross, and Meghan Cullen all drove in runs in the inning, while Danko added another RBI during her second at-bat in the frame, singling through the left side to score Schwab.

The seven runs would have been enough to win this game, as the combination of Julia Palopoli and Kelsi Nau shut down the Crown offense. Palopoli picked up her second win of the season, pitching the first four innings while giving up just six hits and three runs (no earned runs).

Despite the large lead, the offense did not slow down, scoring at least a run in each of their five innings at the dish. The third inning was the other big frame for the Green and Gold, as they scored another seven runs. Danko led things off with her second homerun, a solo shot to left field that put Brockport up 9-0. After an RBI single up the middle from Karleigh Eaton, Brockport loaded the bases for Cullen, who launched her second homer of the season deep over the left-centerfield wall for the grand slam.

The Golden Eagles finished the game with 19 hits as a team, led by Danko, Eaton, and Lindsay Wachna who each had three. Eight different players drove in runs in the game, led by Danko with five and Cullen with four.

Game 2 vs. SUNY Canton: Win, 17-3
Wachna was the driving force on offense in the back end of the doubleheader, going four-for-four from the plate while driving in four runs, including a two run shot in the fourth inning. She finished her day seven-for-seven from the plate with a walk, two doubles, a homerun, and six RBI.

Cullen and Morgan Flamholtz each had three hit games, while  Danko, Hubbard, Jessica Koneski, Shelby Perry, and Penny Lenard all had multi-hit games. Cullen's third inning homerun was her third  of the season, which ranks second on the team only to Koneski's four.

As they have so often this week, Brockport used a huge inning to put their opponent away, this time coming in the top of the fourth when they plated eight runs on seven hits. After Wachna doubled and Perry was hit by a pitch, Hubbard, Flamholtz, Lenard, Cullen, and Danko all hit singles that drove in runs, increasing Brockport's lead to 13-1. After a sac fly from Koneski, Wachna came to the plate for her second at bat of the inning, and cranked a fastball over the left field fence for the three run shot.

Becky Knorr improved to 2-1 on the season with the win, pitching the first three innings of the game. The senior gave up just one run on four hits while in the circle, fanning four Canton hitters in the process.

Brockport has already surpassed the 100 run mark in 2018, and are averaging nearly 10 runs per-game to this point. Four different hitters in Lenard, Koneski, Wachna, and Cullen are hitting over .500, with four more hitting .400+.

The Golden Eagles will wrap up their spring road trip tomorrow morning when they look to extend their winning streak with games against Castleton and North Central beginning at 9 a.m.
