Brockport Splits Important Double Header Against Cortland

LEXINGTON, SC – The College at Brockport's baseball team earned a one-run, 4-3, victory over SUNY Cortland after dropping a heart breaker in game one by a score of 5-3. After the double header, the Golden Eagles hold a record of 5-7 and now sit 1-1 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. The Red Dragons drop to 8-6 on the season and 1-1 in SUNYAC games.

Game One: Loss 5-3

The Green and Gold were held scoreless in the first five innings of the game but maintained a consistent approach at the plate. In the sixth, Tom Kretzler and Anthony Eaton worked back-to-back walks, which forced an opposition pitching change. Lou Miceli got hit by a pitch to load the bases and Josh Cosgrove singled up the middle to get the team on the board for the first time.

Justin Valentino hit a hard ball to the second basemen that allowed Eaton to score and Miceli was able to read a ball in the dirt to score on a wild pitch and tie the game 3-3. The offensive was unable to knock in another run and dropped the first game of the double header. Mark Giallanzo got the start for Brockport and threw 5.2 innings of three run ball, while striking out three.

Game Two: Win 4-3

Senior pitcher, Sam McCumiskey led the way for the Green and Gold, pitching a complete game (7.0 innings) and allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out four. All of the team's scoring came in the fifth inning, starting with a Valentino single to left field. Drew DeBlasiis, Cosgrove and Austin Hall worked three straight walks to score the first run of the inning. Kretzler came up to bat and hit a missile to right center that cleared the bases and put the team up 4-3.

McCumiskey got in his groove in the bottom of the fifth, retiring nine of the final 11 batters of the game to give his team the win. Valentino combined to hit 4-for-5 on the day and Kretzler went 1-for-4 with three RBI in the victory.

The Golden Eagles face off against SUNY Cortland at 10 a.m. for game three of the series on Saturday, March 17th.
