Softball Splits SUNYAC Doubleheader Against Fredonia

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The College at Brockport softball team split an important State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader on Friday evening against Fredonia. The Golden Eagles now sit at 11-9 (1-3 SUNYAC) on the season, while Fredonia moves to 7-16 (1-6).

Game 1: Win, 9-4
Julia Palopoli continued her outstanding freshman campaign in today's opener, moving to 5-2 on the season with the win. The Hauppauge, N.Y. native held the Blue Devils scoreless through the first four innings of play, allowing Brockport to build a stable 6-0 lead in the process.

Three of those runs came in the bottom of the second inning when Alison Missavage and Kacie Hubbard hit back-to-back RBI doubles, putting Brockport on top early. Missavage would end the game with three hits, including a pair of doubles, and led the team with three RBI's.

Brockport increased their lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the third after Meghan Cullen led off the inning with a base knock, and was driven in on a double by Jessica Koneski. After Karleigh Eaton reached on an infield single, Missavage came to the plate again and launched her second straight two-bagger, clearing the bases.

The Golden Eagles would add another three runs in the sixth, using five hits including a triple off the bat of Alexis Ross to put the game away.

Amanda Colon pitched the final inning and a third for the Golden Eagles, allowing two hits but no runs and allowing the Green and Gold to hang on for the win.

Game 2: Loss, 7-6
The Blue Devils hopped out to an early lead in this game, scoring three runs in the top of the first to take hold of the game right away.

The Golden Eagles were able to fight back though, getting two runs back in the bottom of the third, effectively executing situational softball when Ross knocked in Hubbard on an RBI groundout, and Koneski hit an RBI single that scored Cullen.

After another run for Fredonia in the fifth brought their lead back to two at 4-2, the Green and Gold knotted things up in the bottom half of the frame on a clutch two-RBI double from Lindsay Wachna. With a two strike count and two batters already out, the senior roped a fastball over the head of the centerfielder, putting the Golden Eagles right back in the game.

Aren Schwab singled in the bottom of the sixth, giving Brockport their first lead of the game, but three seventh inning  runs for the Blue Devils put them on top once again, and they were able to hang on for the win.

Danko finished the game with three hits to lead the team, while Cullen and Wachna each had multi-hit games as well. Wachna finished her afternoon with three more RBI's in the second game, increasing her season total to 20.

Brockport softball will be back in action on Tuesday when they host a doubleheader against SUNY Oneonta beginning at 2 p.m.
