Men's Soccer Slips Past Nazareth 1-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y.- The College at Brockport men's soccer team won their season opener against Nazareth College Friday night, by a score of 1-0. With the win the Golden Eagles improve to 1-0 on the season while the Golden Flyers fall to 0-1.

The Golden Eagles came out fast and hard to start the game, challenging the Nazareth defenders early and often. The Green and Gold were not held off the score board very long before freshman, Ayub Jeylani, netted his first career goal at 12:45 into the first half. Jeylani's first career goal came from a beautiful pass by junior midfielder, Jason Hayes to put Brockport ahead 1-0.

The defensive battle stayed tough through the first 45 minutes as both teams were held to five shots or less. The opposition showed little quit as they pressured Brockport's goaltender, Tautis Poniskaitis, who proved to be too much for the Golden flyers in the first.

Going into the second half the Green and Gold looked to bring the same energy as they did in the beginning of the first half but the defensive battle ensued. The game's intensity quickly began to mount. In the first 20 minutes of the half, the Golden Flyers were issued two yellow cards, which Brockport then matched deeper into the contest.

With Brockport up by one, Nazareth tried their best to even the score as a shot rung off the post in the 75th minute. A few more shots ensued but goalkeeper Poniskaitis stood tall and registered his first career shutout in the Green and Gold.

"I was very pleased with our overall defensive effort, I felt that we tried to play fast at times and gave the ball away when it was unnecessary," said head coach Gary LaPietra. "It was great to get that first win of the season, congrats to Ayub on his first goal, and to Tautis for registering his first shutout, he played a huge part in our win tonight."

The men's soccer team will have a short layoff as they're back in action on Sunday, Sept. 2 for their game against the Rochester Institute of Technology.
