Men's Soccer To Host Houghton Under the Lights

Brockport, NY – The College at Brockport men's soccer team is at home on Wednesday for its final home game of the year. The team will take a quick step outside of conference play to welcome the Houghton Highlanders for a 7 pm game under the lights at Bob Boozer Field.

Last Time Out: This past weekend was crucial for the Golden Eagles in their fight for a spot in the SUNYAC Tournament. On Friday they upset Oneonta, 3-2, in double overtime to give the Red Dragons their first conference loss of the year. Jeff Hibbard finished with two goals, including the golden goal in the second overtime period. Saturday featured a 1-0 win over New Paltz, with the lone score coming from Nolan Byrnes.

Conference Picture: With the regular season winding down, the conference tournament is coming up quickly. Brockport's two wins against SUNYAC opponents last weekend has kept the team in postseason contention. Oneonta, Plattsburgh, Buffalo State, and Oswego have all clinched a spot, which leaves two slots still up for grabs. Cortland (3-3-1 SUNYAC) and Brockport (3-4-1 SUNYAC) are currently fifth and sixth respectively in the standings going into the final week of the regular season.

SUNYAC Leaders: Matthew Stefaniw and Jeff Hibbard are both among the top 10 point scorers in the SUNYAC this season. Stefaniw has tallied 19 points on seven goals and five assists, ranking him fifth in the conference. Hibbard is ranked eighth in the conference with 15 total points from six goals and three assists.

Against Houghton: The Golden Eagles are 4-1 against Houghton College over the last five years. Last season they beat the Highlanders on the road, 2-1, to close out the regular season. The first goal for Brockport came by way of an own goal due to a Houghton error. Tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation, the match headed to overtime. Towards the end of the first overtime period AJ Sinclair netted the game-winner on a penalty kick to seal the deal.

Scouting Houghton: The Highlanders are heading into this week with a 4-5-5 overall record with an 0-1-3 mark in the Empire 8. This team is used to playing in close games, with 12 of its 14 matches this season being either a draw or decided by one goal. Houghton most recently lost, 1-2, against Alfred University. The team has played its best when at home in 2019, holding a 3-1-2 record on its home turf. Ben DiCrasto leads the team with six goals on the season.

Big Time Matchup: Following Wednesday's game against Houghton, the Green and Gold hit the road for the regular season finale. The team will take on Geneseo (2-5-1 SUNYAC) to fight for a spot in the SUNYAC Tournament. A win over Geneseo would clinch a spot for Brockport in the postseason, allowing the team to defend its conference title from last year. This critical contest is scheduled for Saturday at 1 pm in Geneseo, NY.
