Brockport, N.Y.- Brockport men's hockey begins it's 2019-20 campaign by traveling north to SUNYAC opponents Plattsburgh and Potsdam this weekend. The Golden Eagles will take on Plattsburgh Friday night at 7 p.m. before traveling to Potsdam on Saturday for a 7 p.m. matchup.
Last Weekend: Brockport's upcoming season began with a prelude of two exhibition games this past weekend. The Golden Eagles faced nationally-ranked No. 4 Hobart and Elmira in consecuitve days at home, narrowly missing both victories.
Connor Hutchins,
Jordan Renaud,
Trevor Pray and
Anthony Hora all recorded goals this past weekend, adding to the hype for the upcoming season. Brockport would also utilize all rostered goaltenders over the course of the weekend.
Last Season: Last year the Golden Eagles went 15-9-2 overall and captured a 7-7-2 record in SUNYAC play. This would mark the team's best season in 30 years. Brockport would later fall to Plattsburgh State in the first round of the SUNYAC playoffs when the Cardinals put in two late goals.
Doc Gentzler registered the only postseason goal for the Golden Eagles.
2018-2019 Season Statistics: Brockport hockey was anchored by their solid special teams play, achieving a .172 power play percentage and a .830 penalty kill percentage, both better than their average opponents. The final overall points total for Brockport was 210 compared to their opponent's 140. 10 individual players on the squad recorded double-digit point totals as well, a testament to the established team-first mentality.
Crucial Returners: Junior,
Ryan Romeo returns to the team after a phenomenal past season where he managed 17 points in 26 games played and landed himself in the fourth position in the SUNYAC overall for points by defenseman. Romeo was later selected for the SUNYAC All-Conference Second Team. Senior captain,
Connor Hutchins also returns after leading last years team in points and assists, averaging a point per game. Hutchins went on to be selected for the SUNYAC All-Conference Third Team. Senior
Doc Gentzler, another top offensive threat, returns as last year's leading goal scorer, after registering nine goals and plus-six rating. Gentzler also finished the year selected for the SUNYAC All-Conference Third Team.
2019-2020 Season Schedule: Brockport will start the season on the road, taking on two SUNYAC opponents before they play their first game at home on Friday, November 8th at 7 p.m. The Golden Eagles will host Morrisville for their home opener, doubling as Senior Night and also introduce a Green Out game in support of Stop the Stigma. For the fifth matchup of the season, Brockport will travel again to take on the sixth nationally ranked team, Oswego State, for one of the toughest matchups of the year. On November 30th- December 1st, the team will travel to Saratoga Springs, NY and compete in the Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational. Following this, Brockport then faces the third nationally ranked team of SUNY Geneseo, a true test of character. After playing six out-of-state teams, the Green and Gold will then have to battle through the second half of the year. Brockport's final regular season game will again be against Geneseo on February 22nd. The first round of SUNYAC championships will be on February 26
th, the semifinals on the 29th, and the finals on March 7th. The first round of the NCAA tournament is March 14th.
Plattsburgh Scouting Report: The matchup will also serve as the Cardinals first regular season competition. Like Brockport, they competed in two exhibition games in preparation, capturing two wins against Saint Michaels and Skidmore College. Cam Owens, Pat Egan and Matt Araujo, each recorded 15 points in the 2018-2019 season. The season ended for Plattsburgh in the second round of SUNYAC playoffs with a loss to Oswego, 3-2. Plattsburgh is also returning with a majority of last year's team, including nine forwards and three goaltenders.
Potsdam Scouting Report: The Bears are coming off a rough season where they finished 8-16-1 overall and didn't qualify for playoffs. They are hoping to right the ship with 20 returning players this year including their top-eight scorers. Bryce Ferrell led their team in points and will be the spear head on a potentially potent Potsdam offense. They start their season off at home against top-ranked Geneseo and then meet Brockport the night after for a stiff opening weekend of competition.
