Brockport Takes on Buffalo St. for First Round of SUNYAC Tournament

Brockport, NY – The College at Brockport men's soccer team will travel to Buffalo, NY this Saturday, for a matchup against Buffalo State in the first round of SUNYAC Tournament. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 pm.

Last Time Out: Brockport defeated Geneseo this past Saturday, 2-1, improving to 4-4-1 in SUNYAC play. Matthew Stefaniw scored early in the game, but it was Nolan Byrnes' second half goal off a free kick that won the game. The win earned the team the #6 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament.

Key Players: Stefaniw is currently the leading scorer for the Green and Gold, with eight goals and five assists. He ranks fourth in the conference with 21 total points on the year. Jeff Hibbard is eighth in the SUNYAC with 15 points from six goals and three assists. Zach Langelotti and Jason Hayes also have double digit points, with 11 and 10 respectively.

Big Goal Byrnes: Nolan Byrnes has stepped up big in clutch situations twice already this year, both coming in crucial conference matchups. On the road against New Paltz he was able to score the lone goal of the match, in a much-needed win in SUNYAC play. Byrnes became the hero once again in the regular season finale against Geneseo, burying the game-winning goal that clinched Brockport a spot in the conference tournament.

Tournament History: The Golden Eagles have missed the SUNYAC Tournament just once (2016) since 2008. They have made it into the championship game five times in that span, including two SUNYAC titles in 2009 and 2018. Last year the team defeated Cortland, 2-0, in the championship game after getting by Plattsburgh and New Paltz in the earlier rounds.

Against Buff. State: These two teams faced off earlier in the regular season for a Brockport home game. The Green and Gold were unable to find the back of the net in the contest, as Buffalo State won the match 2-0. In the last three meetings Brockport is 1-1-1 against the Bengals.

Scouting Buff. State: The Bengals are 14-3 overall and 6-3 in the SUNYAC, which earned them the #3 seed for the conference tournament. The team most recently defeated Alfred University, 4-2, on the road. Buffalo State has three players inside the top 10 point scorers in the SUNYAC. Theo Pencic (35 points) and Zak Shaibi (24 points) rank second and third respectively, while Ali Shawish (20 points) is sixth in the conference. Pencic and Shaibi have combined for a total of 24 goals so far this season.

Win or Go Home: This first round matchup between Brockport and Buffalo State will decide who advances into the SUNYAC Tournament Semi-Finals. The losing team's season will come to an end, while the winner travels to face Plattsburgh on Wednesday, November 6th at 1 pm.
