BROCKPORT, NY – The College at Brockport men's soccer team used four first half goals to jump out to an early lead and never looked back as the Golden Eagles earned a 5-1 SUNYAC victory against Potsdam on Friday afternoon at Bob Boozer Field. Brockport remains unbeaten at home this season (4-0) and improved to 6-4-1 overall.
The high scoring affair featured five different goal scorers for the Golden Eagles as they picked up their first SUNYAC win of the season. Potsdam, fresh off a huge OT win over nationally-ranked Buffalo State just one week ago, saw its record fall to 3-8-1 overall and 1-2 in SUNYAC play.
Jason Hayes got the home team on the board first when he took a centering pass from Stefaniw – ripped a shot off a defender in front – and then put home the rebound to hand the Golden Flyers a 1-0 lead just 31 seconds into the contest.
Less than two minutes later, Brockport doubled its lead when
Zach Langelotti headed home a perfect cross from Hayes, to put the Golden Eagles on top 2-0 just 2:24 into the contest.
Potsdam would not go down easy as the Bears cut their deficit in half with a goal from Justin Lamando at the 14:51 marker.
However, the Golden Eagles responded quickly and netted three unanswered goals to pick up the key conference victory.
DJ Taylor headed home a corner kick from
Chris Kinsley – bar down – to put Brockport up 3-1 in the 25th minute. Less than four minutes later senior
Jeff Hibbard then added his fourth goal of the season to give Brockport a comfortable 4-1 lead at the half.
Leading scorer
Matthew Stefaniw could not be kept out of the box score as he found the back of the net for an insurance goal midway through the second half to cap the scoring on the day. Stefaniw's team-best sixth goal of the year was assisted by Kinsley.
Brockport outshot the visitors 16-5 on the day and also earned a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Goalie
Joseph Romano earned the start for the Golden Eagles and he stopped two shots to pick up his second win of the year.
Brockport returns to the pitch on Saturday when it hosts SUNY Plattsburgh for a key conference contest at 1 p.m. on the grass at A. Huntley Parker Field.
