Buffalo, NY – The College at Brockport men's soccer team was on the road Saturday to face the Buffalo State Bengals in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament. The defending SUNYAC Champion Golden Eagles lost in overtime, 2-1, and have been eliminated from the tournament.
The Bengals struck first blood in the match with a goal in the first 10 minutes of play. Outshooting Brockport 4-2, Buffalo State held a 1-0 lead at halftime.
In a highly contested second half, the Green and Gold were able to increase their chances with six shots in the period. One of those shots came from senior
Jeff Hibbard in the 71
st minute, which tied the game up at 1-1.
Chris Kinsley was credited with the assist on the goal. Hibbard's equalizing score would be the last of regulation, as the game went to overtime.
Neither team could score in the first period of extra time, but that was not the same story in the second overtime. Less than four minutes into the second stint of extra time, Buffalo State would net the game-winner, securing a 2-1 victory.
The loss in overtime spoils any chance of Brockport repeating as SUNYAC Champions, as the team's season comes to an end. Buffalo State will advance to the conference Semi-Finals next week against Plattsburgh.
The Golden Eagles finish the year with an overall record of 9-8-2.
