KEAN, N.J. – The College at Brockport baseball team earned their first win of the young season on Sunday thanks to a strong outing on the mound by Trevor McCarthy. The offense came alive late to give the Golden Eagles an impressive 8-0 victory over Gwynedd Mercy University. The Green and Gold shift back to .500 with a 1-1 record, while the Griffins now hold an 0-3 mark. 
 
The first five innings saw a pitching duel between both sides that allowed only two combined hits. After McCarthy made quick work of the opposition, striking out two of the three batters faced, things changed in the bottom of the sixth. Daniel DelGaizo kicked off the offense with a walk and was moved over to second base after Charlie Serino executed a sacrifice bunt perfectly. Nicholas Pastore converted on the opportunity and singled through the right-side scoring DelGaizo for the first run of the game. Tom Kretzler was the next batter up and hit a double to right field that was enough to allow the speedy Pastore to score from first and bring the score to 2-0. A couple of batters later, Liam O'Leary hit a single up the middle to score Kretzler for the final run of the inning, growing the advantage to 3-0. 
 
McCarthy once again executed his pitches and with good defense behind him, he worked a 1-2-3 inning to bring his fellow Golden Eagles back to the plate. Anthony Eaton worked a walk, before Brad Nowak singled to left field to put two runners on. Three runs followed after a pair of errors by the opposition occurred when Ryan Mansell and Delgaizo put the ball in play. Once the dust settled after the errors, Brockport was ahead 6-0 after seven innings. 
 
Brandon Greenspan relieved McCarthy out of the bullpen and pitched the final two innings. The Green and Gold scored another two runs in the eighth inning after three straight walks kicked off the frame and loaded the bases. After a double play left two batters on base, Serino was able to reach base on an error that allowed Mansell and Nowak to score and give the team an 8-0 lead. 
 
The Golden Eagles were patient at the plate, collecting seven walks and striking out only three times. McCarthy earned the win, pitching 7.0 innings of scoreless baseball, striking out eight, walking two, while allowing on three hits. 
 
Up next for Brockport is a trip to West Virginia where they will face Alfred State University and Muhlenberg College on Saturday and Sunday.
