Softball closes out 2019 season with a dominating sweep of Plattsburgh

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport softball team closed out the 2019 season Monday afternoon with a home double header against SUNY Plattsburgh.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP – 
  • The Golden Eagles finished their campaign 14-20 overall and 5-13 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED – 

Game 1
Win, 9-8
  • Both teams battled back and forth for the lead through the first four innings, including four lead changes.
  • Meghan Cullen got the ball rolling from the very start, notching a leadoff single up the middle.
  • Cullen then grabbed a stolen base, allowing Alexis Ross to pick up an RBI on a single of her own.
  • With one out on the board, Jessica Koneski nailed a home run over the center field fence, scoring Ross in addition to giving the Golden Eagles a 3-1 lead at the end of one.
  • The Cardinals would retake the lead in the second with a pair of runs, however their lead was short lived as the Green and Gold put up a run in the bottom of the third.
  • Casey Danko started the movement with a single to right field, followed shortly by a Morgan Flamholtz walk and a single through the left side by Alison Missavage to load the bases.
  • The Golden Eagles third run came on a walk by Lexi Abernathy with bases loaded to score Flamholtz.
  • The Cardinals tied things up in the top of the fourth with a solo run, and the score would remain 4-4 until the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • Mandi Lucas led off a four-run inning for the Golden Eagles with a single through the right side.
  • Lucas notched the second stolen base of the day in the next at bat, allowing Cullen to quickly move her to third on a base hit to second.
  • Ross then added a single of her own with a shot to left field, scoring Lucas.
  • Danko followed suit in the proceeding at bat with a strong double to left center, giving the Golden Eagles a first and third situation.
  • The third consecutive hit would come from Koneski, as the junior singled to left field, picking up an RBI off Ross.
  • Missavage would round out the inning with a single down the left field line, scoring both Duggan and Danko.
  • The Cardinals made things interesting in the top of the seventh, adding four runs to tie the game at eight.
  • Lucas would give the Green and Gold their first base runner in the bottom of the seventh with a walk, followed by a double to left center by Cullen to move runners to second and third with one out.
  • Danko loaded the bases on a walk, allowing the winning run to cross the plate in the following at bat with a walk by Koneski.
  • Koneski's walk sealed the deal for the Golden Eagles, allowing them to squeeze out a 9-8 win over the Cardinals.
 
Game 2
Win, 14-0
  • The Golden Eagles had a dominating offensive performance in game two, notching seven runs in the first inning.
  • Ross gave the Green and Gold their first base runner on an error by the short stop and Danko quickly made it a first and second situation with a single to third base.
  • Koneski continued the pattern with a single to right center, scoring Ross. Flamholtz then did the same to the opposite side, scoring Danko.
  • Both Koneski and Flamholtz advanced on a passed ball allowing Missavage to make it a bases loaded situation on a walk.
  • Two wild pitches and two pass balls would allow the Golden Eagles next four runs to cross the plate, and the final would come on a stolen base by Tori Thuman.
  • The Golden Eagles improved their lead to eight in the third, starting with a leadoff walk by Danko.
  • Koneski added another hit with a single to third followed by a single to center from Flamholtz. Both runners would advance on a passed ball the next at bat.
  • Missavage then put a hard-hit ball in play forcing an error by the third basemen, allowing her to pick up an RBI on Koneski.
  • The Golden Eagles continued to expand the gap in the third with four more runs.
  • This time Thuman led things off with a single to right field. Cullen then forced a series of fielding errors to give the Golden Eagles second and third.
  • An overthrow on Ross's hit to the pitcher then scored Thuman to move the lead to nine.
  • Danko capped off a great day at the plate with a single to left field, picking up two RBI on Ross and Cullen.
  • Missavage added the final out of the inning on a single up the middle, scoring Danko.
  • The Golden Eagles would secure their victory in the bottom of the fourth with two more runs.
  • Cullen homered to start off the inning, moving the lead to 13. Justice Colvin and Julia Palopoli came in as pinch hitters in the following at bats, executing perfectly.
  • Colvin singled to right field, moving Danko to third and then Palopoli added a double in the right field gap to score Danko, sealing the deal at 14-0.
  • The Golden Eagles would close out game two in five innings to sweep the Cardinals.
 
KEY STATISTICS – 
 
Game 1
  • The Golden Eagles had six players put up strong performances at the plate.
  • Missavage and Lucas put up perfect appearances, Missavage with an even 4-for-4 with two RBI and Lucas with an even 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs.
  • Cullen, Ross, Danko, and Koneski followed suit, each with .500 appearances or better.
  • Cullen notched 3-for-5 with a run, Ross posted 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI, Danko added 2-for-4 with a walk and a run, and Koneski rounded it out with a 2-for-4 appearance with a run, a walk and four RBI.
  • Cheyenne Wilson got the W for the Golden Eagles on the mound.
Game 2 
  • Wilson picked up her second win of the day, only giving up three hits and no runs in 18 batters faced.
  • Danko and Koneski each added another strong performance at the plate, both finishing 2-for-2 and amassing five runs and three RBI.
  • Flamholtz and Missavage followed closely behind, Flamholtz notching a 2-for-3 appearance with a run and an RBI and Missavage posting 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI.
