Brockport Splits Double Header Against New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The College at Brockport baseball team split a road double header against State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) competition on Saturday. They dropped the first game to SUNY New Paltz 9-5, before bouncing back and taking the second game, 9-1.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP – 
  • The Golden Eagles sit at 9-14 overall and 4-7 in conference games.
  • The Hawks stay at .500 on the year with a 9-10 mark, while sporting a 1-7 SUNYAC record
HOW IT HAPPENED – 
 
Game One: Loss, 9-5
  • The Green and Gold jumped ahead in the fourth inning with a homerun by Ryan Mansell, the first of his collegiate career.
  • Later in the fourth, an error on a hard-hit ball by Brad Nowak, allowed Lou Miceli to score from third and extend the lead to 2-0. 
  • New Paltz answered back in the bottom of the fourth with a run, before tying the game and taking the 3-2 lead with two runs in the fifth.
  • The Golden Eagles continued to fall behind in the seventh, when a three-run homerun by the opposition put the deficit at 8-2. 
  • Brockport began their comeback in the eighth inning with an RBI single by Miceli.
  • In the ninth Tom Kretzler sent a long ball to left field to drive in Mansell and cut the score to 8-5. 
  • Unfortunately, the offense could not add more runs and complete the comeback.
Game Two: Win, 9-1
  • Trevor McCarthy shut down the Hawks in game two, pitching a 7.0 inning complete game, allowing one run on five hits and striking out four.
  • The Green and Gold took the lead in the first inning with an RBI single to center field by Mansell that brought home Nicholas Pastore
  • After New Paltz tied the game up at 1-1 in the third inning, the Brockport offense came to life in the fourth.
  • The frame kicked off with three straight walks to O'Leary, Aaron Cook and Anthony Eaton
  • O'Leary scored with a pass ball to give the team a 2-1 lead.
  • Daniel DelGaizo then hit a three-run homerun to center field to suddenly increase the lead to 5-1.
  • After Justin Valentino and Pastore reached base, a sacrifice bunt by Mansell moved them into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.
  • Kretzler worked a walk to load the bases before Valentino scored on a Miceli fielder's choice.
  • O'Leary continued the hot hitting with an RBI single, before Cook cleared the bases with a two RBI double to right field to grow the advantage to 9-1.
  • McCarthy shut the opposition down the rest of the way, giving up two hits in the last four innings of play.
KEY GAME STATISTICS – 
 
Game One
  • Mansell finished the first game hitting 3-for-4 with a homerun, three runs scored and an RBI.
  • Miceli and Liam O'Leary both finished with multi-hit games, with Miceli adding a run and RBI.
Game Two
  • DelGaizo hit 2-for-4 in the second game, driving in three runs, while scoring one himself.
  • Valentino recorded the only other multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Five different Golden Eagles recorded an RBI, with seven different crossing home plate with a run. 
UP NEXT – 
  • Brockport will battle New Paltz in game three of the series on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
