Cortland, NY – The SUNY Brockport Men's Soccer team upset the number 10 ranked team in the nation SUNY Cortland in Double OT Saturday afternoon by a score of 3-2.
Nick Van Wie scored his first goal of the season while Matthew Stefanew tallied two goals in the game including the game winner in double overtime.
Scoring the game's first goal was Anthony Ruggiero at the 6:10 mark of the game following a shot from Lukas Rubio that was deflected for a save by Brockport goalkeeper
Andrew Taylor. The deflected save was then rebound by Ruggiero to give Cortland the 1-0 lead.
23:28 into the first half,
Matthew Stefaniw capitalized on his opportunity on a Penalty Kick finding the back of the net to even up the score. The goal increased Stefaniw's penalty kick attempts to a perfect 2-2 this season.
With the game even entering the second half of play, Cortland's Blake Aronson found the net with a header off a loose ball off Brockport's defense. The header put the Red Dragons up 2-1 at the 54:26 mark.
It wouldn't take long for the Golden Eagles to even the game up as four minutes following Cortland's second goal, Brockport's
Nick Van Wie scored on a one touch cross from the right side of the pitch by teammate
Zach Langelotti. Van Wie's goal makes it the first of his collegiate career and couldn't have come at a better time for the Green and Gold's offense evening the game up at 2-2.
Not even 24-hours after going into double overtime with Oswego State would the Golden Eagles find themselves in the exact same situation. Playing until the end and not giving up against the No. 10 ranked team in the nation, Brockport would hang tight for another 20 minutes of overtime sending the game into a second overtime period. It didn't take long for Brockport though as only 31 seconds into the 2OT would
Matthew Stefaniw net his second goal of the game and tenth of the season.
Seamus Parker gave Stefaniw a one time cross from the right side of the field giving Stefaniw his third game winning goal of the season as Brockport's bench cleared to celebrate the victory.
In total, Cortland managed to get off 27 shots with 15 coming on goal. Brockport made more of their opportunities though with 16 shots and only finding six on goal was all it needed to seal the deal.
Cortland's goalkeeper Braden Melveney allowed three goals while making three save.
Andrew Taylor had a game in net making a career high 13 saves against 27 shots faced.
The Golden Eagle's will return home on Friday, October 15th where they'll face the Plattsburgh State Cardinals in a 3 p.m. contest. The SUNYAC match will be the first home game for the men's soccer team since defeating Elmira 6-0 on September 11th.
